Buying My Buddy a Gift...Surprise, It's Denim!!
-
@Mizmazzle 21oz no question!
-
i agree. i'm thinkin' 777s-21 indigo bro. tag 36?
also, @Brian may have a point. And i think it'd be easier to get away with a CPO or something than jeans. BUT, if you're successful in nailing it, it'd be a game changer for your buddy.

How active is your buddy? Going for a tapered cut may restrict motion. I’d say a big thigh 36 in 888 or those 634s. Everyone thinks they’re “too big” at first. But then love them like hell after a few weeks of enjoying the great cut and movement. 21oz is great denim too. A smidge crispy to start and then super soft. 14iB I have in the IHDR Collabs. Beautiful but also very tough denim. Lighter but more rigid I think than the 21oz. I’d prob stick to slubs, 18oz vintage, or flagship 21oz for weights

@Brian @pmadison95
I agree taking him to a retailer is a good plan. But it all comes back to knowing the man and his nature. For my wedding, all the groomsmen went shopping for suits together. We had a guy at the store asking us all these questions about the details of the suits we wanted to add on or leave off. Fabrics. Colors. It was all too much for him.Basically, he’s not into the whole shopping experience. Honestly neither am I. But I am into researching and fixating on small details until I find the perfect thing. I’m thinking I’ll buy him 2-3 cuts and then he can choose the one he likes the best. Then I’ll return the others. If I limit the options and make it simple for him, in the end he will hopefully end up with an epic pair of jeans. I suppose the real gift is me forcing the 21 oz denim on him and saying” wear these for a month, you’ll thank me!”

@WhiskeySandwich thanks buddy. I hear what everyone is saying about the risk of buying someone jeans. It’s tricky. But, there in lies the nature of this experiment. Since falling into this denim game, I’ve got really good at understanding measurements and how they contribute to fit and comfort. I basically buy all my wife’s clothes for her now.
I know my buddy very very well. I understand his nature and his likes/ dislikes. This isn’t so much a “hey let me buy you some cool jeans” type of deal. It’s a psycho-social experiment in getting him something he would never do for himself, but I know he would greatly love once all the stigma, annoyance, and distain of being in a retail space has been stripped away.
Sure a shirt would be easier. But we’re talking a pair of jeans here. The foundational piece of quintessential clothing that is the cornerstone of every person on earths wardrobe. He loves his jeans, but hates the shit quality of them. I’d like to give him the gift of Iron Heart by doing all the leg work he’d never do for himself.
Like you said, could change his life forever. Worst case scenario, I’m out a few hundred bucks and they sit in his closet. But I’m confident if I take all my knowledge and experience I can get him something rad he will be stoked on.

@Mizmazzle dude i dig it. I like what you're doing and i do think its a very personal and cool gesture. like - let me go full nerd and get you into what i'm into so we can have another thing to bond over. i've honestly thought of doing this to a buddy or two who have complimented my IH. I hope it works out and i'd love to know how it goes. Maybe I'll try the same one day!
-
@Fadez yup!! Good points my man. This is where I’m at.
Division Road has the 888 21oz in a tag 36 (with a full refund return policy)Iron heart has both the 666 and the 634 cut in 21oz.
If I buy all three cuts and let him choose which fit he likes best…there it is. I can say, fight through the next couple weeks in these everyday. I promise you’ll have the radest jeans you could ever imagine.
-
@Mizmazzle you could ask him what his best fitting pants are when your over and measure them... tell him, "none of your damn business" when he wonders why in the hell you're busting out measuring tape. Our ask his fiancée to cop some measurements.
Big fan of this bud. I'll speak for all of us; fit pics are a must when he settles on a pair -
@flannel-slut @Mizmazzle means serious business. He’s already measured a pair
-
@flannel-slut haha! Thanks homie! I did manage to get him to lend me his favorite fitting jeans. So i'm confident with the measurements I took from those I can get something that is right in the sweet spot for him!!
Now, if you see a new forum member pop up around end of July!! Well then shit!! Yahtzee!!!
-
I'd say 21oz. or 17oz. but if he prefers a comfy denim right out off the box go 21oz. indigo and you both won't regret it and he will be very happy i guess21 is king....
-
@Tago-Mago not gonna lie, that was a bit of an odd feeling getting that up close and personal with my old friend's britches!!
-
@Mizmazzle I know what you mean going in person to a retail location can be overwhelming. I like your idea of ordering multiple fits for him to try on. Best of luck I hope he falls in love with a pair.
-
@Mizmazzle I would say 21 oz is great to start... I came from 13 oz nudies before I ordered my first IH bottoms and the 21 oz did not feel that much more heavy than these and much softer
-
@Mizmazzle you could probably arrange a appointment with your store of choice (Berkeley Supply Co, the nearest?) and just go down with your mate. In my experience the shops that sell are IH are quite chill and not quite the same as the wedding suit fitting vibe!
