Getting dirty today!
X post from IHC-06 -
Curious, do a lot of Wills owners find they sit pretty snug on the hips/butt? My large long fits pretty good but is a little snug on my hips/butt. It’s probably got 1-1.5 inches of breathing room, I think the heavy fabric makes it feel tighter than it actually is. The jacket doesn’t ride up or anything it’s just a little more fitted than I’m used too. I see quite a few pictures on here of guys with a similar snug fit on the hips, so curious on peoples thoughts.
It’s long enough that even with layers I don’t think it will be an issue as they will sit higher. On my Type 3’s I’d leave the bottom button undone to give a bit more room, the button on these doesn’t work as well for that, it looks kinda weird.
I kinda hope I get a bit of shrinkage in the length from natural wear and tear (getting wet and drying off), some people online have commented that similar style waxed jackets do shrink up. Maybe mine just needs to be broken in? I’ve only worn it a couple days!

Arms and overall length will definitely shorten a bit after the creases set in

@nrtphotos I have a regular length and I don’t notice any particular snug feeling in the waist. The belly is snug for sure haha! Because the fabric has no give, it gets tight feeling sometimes.
I’m a big fan of a two-way zipper. I always keep it up a couple of inches. -
Got a little wet trick or treating with the kids

@bluemantra yeah I wear the Hawkins gloves for summer riding. They’re solid.

Time to retire? Or keep trashing?

All packed for the gym.

Can anyone comment on the fit of the Waxed Wills? Did you size up from your normal SJ shirt or denim jacket size? I'm an XL in all their shirts/jackets so far but do not have ample room for layering anymore after washing in both the denim Ramblin' and the Sashiko Townes (I can fit an IH heavy flannel under them, but it's not incredibly comfortable). I know I won't be washing the Waxed Wills, just looking for advice. Thanks

@dert As far as my experience goes, I wear a Large V2 Wills jacket and it’s a little roomy with a t-shirt. (I like it that way due to the heft of the jacket) And with a UHF I can get it on, but it’s not something I’d wear out and about comfortably.
My chest measures 22.75”
I don’t own any other SJ jackets, but I do wear their pocket T in an XL.
If a lost a couple more pounds, a light hoodie under the Wills would be primo!

This was tough for me as well. I didn't have any Ship John pieces when my Wills order was ready for sewing. I measured a bunch of the jackets in my closet and ended up ordering the Large size Regular length Wills, mostly because I have a leather jacket that has similar measurements to the Large Regular Wills and I thought the weight of the leather jacket would be similar to the weight of the waxed canvas.
I am 6'-1" and 190 lbs. My UHFs are size Large. I can easily wear a Large UHF under my Large Wills.
I'm happy with my size choice. Best advice I can give is to be guided by the measurements of the other jackets you have and that you like the fit of. Hope this helps. I think they have a remake policy if you order something and then change your mind to go bigger or smaller, so, worst case, you'll get the size you need a couple of months later than your first shot at it.

@chadstone30 I concur, I went through the same process when I had to size mine. I did some measurements of existing jackets and pretty much everything pointed me to the Large Regular Wills. I also had a few e-mail conversations with the staff at Ship - John who were both helpful and knowledgeable.
It was a bit critical the sizing for me as I am UK based and did not fancy the shipping costs and general hassle of returning a wrong sized jacket. Fortunately the homework paid off.

Thought I’d post a photo of my beater Ship John hat after seeing @Brock post his.

@Palmer Killer! Did that start our black?
-
@Danimal506 brown
-
@Palmer Still, that’s seen some wear. How long have you had it?
-
@Mister_Brue I think I got it back in 2018. I’m pretty sure it was the first hat model Mike released.
