White's Boots
-
If you have any experience with Alden, my 10D Whites SJ and SD pairs fit comparably to my 10D Alden Barrie and True Balance boots. The SD fits the widest of all (especially at the toes), followed by the TB, and a tie between Barrie/SJ. A thick pair of socks makes up the difference between the SD and the other three. If I had it to do again, I'd get the SD in C width. For reference every pair of Nike I've had for years has been 10.5.
The Alden TB might be wider overall, but the cork insole they use molds well to your foot. The hard leather insole Whites uses hardly molds at all. I much prefer the Alden insole. Sticking a cheap insole in the SD feels uncomfortable and doesn't help the width issue much.
The whole sizing issue gets more complex because my left foot is bigger than the right by a half size and width…

My second hand Whites arrived today, so comfy that I can't take them off.

You cannot go wrong with Whites, the build quality is incredible.

I doubt I'll ever purchase any other boots for regular wear. I'm going to resole my Abingtons, and just bought some Israeli army combat boots to beat up through the winter, my leather soled SD's wouldn't be much use in snow.

Definitely my next pair of boots

I got my share of brown boots right now (danner mountain light, alden indy and 1000 mile boots), but I need a good pair of black boots too, and for now I've ordered a pair of dr. martens ormonds (I know, in a completely.. totally different league. So the long term plan (2012) is black chromexel, cap toe, double or triple sole, brass hardware version of the White's semi dress. Perfect for someone in the legal profession like me
