IH-634

sounds like its woven on a projectile loom rather than a shuttle which would make it a more price point jean but still with the functional characteristics.
the reason this will do well in Japan rather than anywhere else is because IH Japan from what i gather sell to a lot of bikers which are after practicality as most of us here are after the vintage personalities.

and my 461, same denim, as I have understood. for some reason they look now in the pics darker than they are

Resurrecting this old thread…
I just recieved a pair of these non-selvedge 634s and I'm very pleased! They're going for well under $200 on Rakuten right now so I pulled the trigger on a pair out of curiosity and because I wanted a backup for my UK sourced IH-634Ss. I was expecting them to be exactly the same, but there are some subtle differences here that are a pleasant surprise.
First, they came with a heart shaped brass key hook, so that was nice. Second, the back pockets are canvas lined, unlike the 634S version. That's a great bonus. Third, the stitching is gold throughout rather than gold on the main seams and beige on the pocket arcs like the selvedge version. Fourth, the fit is slightly looser. The waist (marked 33) is about 1/2 inch wider than the same in selvedge and the legs seem a bit wider too. This may be a batch-to-batch fluke, but I like the subtle fit difference.
Also, as pointed out already in the thread, the projectile loomed fabric is less sluby (making them look slightly more dressy) and more uniform, giving them a very "Cone Mills" kind of look. They're also more starched so they're much stiffer out of the box, but still clearly one-washed.
Overall I'm VERY pleasantly surprised. As is the case with most of us here my obsession is with slub selvedge, but these vanilla non-selvedge 634s are really quite special. I wouldn't shy away from them if you're interested in a budget pair of IH jeans with the same high quality as the selvedge based jeans.
