Luggage Bags and Packs
-
I've been coveting the Barnstormers Rigging Co.'s "Swatter" duffel bag for well over a year now and finally managed to grab one.
The "swatter" comes into two color versions. A navy with dark leather and an olive drab with a lighter tannish red leather. Those two colors come in a no-stencil and a "San Fransisco Seals" stenciled version. I grabbed the stenciled olive drab version. Not usually a fan of stencils, but these stencils just seem to work perfectly with this bag IMO, both becasue it's a throwback to the types of bags that major and minor league ball players would have lugged around back when they were riding buses all over the country and because "seals" seems to work with the military aesthetic of the olive drab.
Here are some not so great pics of the bag filled with every single item from my bottoms drawer (i.e. all my pants, shorts, swimming suits and pajama bottoms–minus the one pair I'm wearing, but those would fit too).
The swatter has no external pockets but does have two internal pouches (pics from BRYWB).
Here's a pic of the bag in action (also stolen from BRYWB)
The simplicity of this bag is what drew me in, but also the cause of a long hesitation. The lack of an over the other shoulder messenger style strap, shorter hand straps, external pockets etc makes for a very pared down, no frills look that I like. But also leaves the bag missing quite a few functions. What tipped the scales for me was realization that I prefer tote bag style near shoulder straps over messenger style straps or even backpacks for travel.

@Cutlasshound I think that the Bedouin is winning right now, particularly in like of comments made by @Snowy about the Bihn bags.
The Bedouin Ottoman is a bigger version of the Delireis. If I can get hold of one then it might be the best choice. Lantiki have it in stock.
@Graeme, I'm going way back here but did you pick up an Bedouin Ottoman?

Dude i would highly recommend the Bedouin Foundry stuff. I have the Genghis messenger and its beautifully crafted. Plus it comes with a lifetime guarantee and is handmade in England

^i really like the look and simplicity of the Delireis. I've sent them an email about a Black/Black is out of stock now. Have you seen the Delireis in person? If so any thoughts?

I have, but it was about three years ago when i bought my messenger. The woman in the shop had the deleires and she was saying what a great bag it was and that i should get one over the messenger.
It was beautifully constructed. The only deal breaker for me was that it didnt have a padded back panel.
The only other thing, i love the messenger, but the canvas can get a bit hot in warmer climates, so that might be something you wish to consider!
Percival in Soho also stock them so might be worth dropping an email.
Kinoko bikes dont do the deleiris but they do the ballistic nylon rolltop….. http://www.kinokostore.com/catalogsearch/result/?order=relevance&dir=desc&q=bedouin

Plus i did see the ballistic nylon one in the flesh and also very nice, not quite as luxuriant as the wax canvas plus it uses the itw nexus cobra buckles (plastic) rather than the metal. I suppose it depends on the aesthetic you desire!

Thanks for the offer but I heard back from Silas at Bedouin. I put my name on the list for a Black/Black Delireis

Ok, those Bedouins are seriously nice. Pricy but looks like they are worth it.

The SE has a leather front panel, which is stamped with various tattoo inspired designs. They were made in blue with red leather and black with black leather. This is one of the former.
Silas found a couple of SEs when he moved office a few months ago. I don't know if he still has them, but it doesn't hurt to ask…

Thanks for the picture. It looks great but the bag lining on the SE is not kid or wife friendly.
I confirmed my preorder with Silas today. I only have to wait a few weeks.
