Random Rants

I'm torn giving panhandlers money. We have a big heroin problem and I dont want to contribute to it but I dont want someone's car window getting smashed for the coins in the cupholder either.

that's kind of where i'm at. On the one hand, I don't want to contribute to someone's addiction, be it alcohol or drugs, but at the same time, I know there are people out there that are truly down on their luck and need help. I remember seeing a woman about a month ago holding up a sign that said something about being a single mother, need help. She genuinely had that look of shame on her face, so in that moment I felt bad for her. Sadly, I never carrry cash so I had nothing to give her, otherwise I would have.
As a parent of a 4 yo I can't imagine what it must be like to be homeless, jobless, penniless and without food, let alone not having the means to care for a child. I think there are a lot of barriers for the homeless to overcome finding gainful employment or a place to live. When my son goes on his tantrums asking for toys and such I sometimes remind him that there are children out there that are homeless and have nothing. I don't know that he fully grasps the idea that you need money to survive and that not everyone is fortunate.

The funniest sign I saw a panhandler carrying was one that said, "why lie? I need beer money."

Fun little experiment… As you know Paypal ALWAYS fucks you over when you wanna convert money...
Here goes... I wanna send 300$ to a mate (personal payment)...
Paypal says: 300$ = 251,59€
So 251.59€ should be 300$, right?..
Paypal says: 251.59€ = 278.43$ (!!!)
In fact, if I send in €, and want him to receive 300$ net, I'd have to send 271.08€...
Same with £...
Paypal says: 300$ = 220,13£
But if I pay in £:
Paypal says: 220.13£ = 278.23$
In fact, I'd have to pay 237.36£ for him to receive 300$ net.

PayPal is the worst.
So I work at a small business, we get a lot of people who stop by and pitch their products for us to potentially carry. Yesterday this dude comes in, turns out he's the owner of this new company out of Dallas trying to expand. Well I chat with him for a bit and he starts to tell me about his product. Then he says: "you know, this stuff would fly off the shelves at [Competitor Store], but I already went over there and for whatever reason they weren't interested. So I just figured I would stop by." ???
Like you really think that sales pitch is going to make me want to sell your product?
Told my bosses about it later and it made for a funny story at least. -
Ha ha! No worries mate, we'll get there.

There was a time when I had PayPal balances in dollars, euros, and yen, for exactly this sort of crap. Didn't like PayPal tying up my money like that, though.
