IHSB-BB-NAT - Natural Horsehide Jacket - The Bareback
-
Received my jacket yesterday, size is L, still have enough room to wear a light/middle weight denim jacket underneath, that beast is thick, can't wait to beat the crap out of it once summer is finished
-
Might put some recent pictures in here

@Max Power Looking good! I always smile when I see one of your posts. Thank you!
-
@Max Power love the color your jacket has become.
I have the type III version and have not treated mine with anything yet and have not laid it out in the sun. I am having some honeycomb patina happening that I really dig.
My question is if I use a treatment, would I lose those patina marks making it more uniform or would it just darken everything a bit with the already darker parts even darker?
I'm asking you and anyone else who may be able to lend an ear. I'm not sure if I want to use any treatment if it'll take away the contrast that has started to develop.

Nice pictures as always ^^ Love this "tan" color.

Your whole jacket will darken the same way and you will keep the contrast from your creases, it's like when you are oiling your boots and every parts with stains or indigo transfer darken also i guess ^^

Thanks a lot @goosehd . Happy to hear that!
@Oaktavia I used mustang paste which usually doesn't darken leather a lot. With this bright natural colour there was a pretty visible effect, I think I did post pictures of it a while back. The darkening will be pretty even on all areas, however the area beneath the combs will probably stay a bit lighter unless you really massage the paste in evenly.
With time there will be darker areas from wear anyway, I just took this picture yesterday.

Okay cool thanks @Max Power that's what I would have assumed but was not sure exactly. If you can't tell, this is my first jacket of it's kind. Wearing mine now…
Photo looks awesome! The colors are so rich and honey-like I love em.
-
Thanks @Oaktavia . I'm very much enjoying your jacket Evo on Instagram. It really gets darker quickly but I needed to get a darker caramel colour to fully enjoy it. Mustang paste worked fine. I left the inside natural and you can clearly see a difference, in fact the inside is in a similar state as yours I think.
-
@Max Power that was a clever idea to keep the inside natural. Stoked to see how both of our jackets evolve, though I will be hanging mine up in the next month or so when it heats up here in Maryland. If I decide to treat my jacket, I'll likely try and find the Mustang paste that you used if it's still available.

@Giles How much Obenaufs oil did you need to do the whole jacket? Will the 8oz bottle do, or is the 16oz required?
@Max Power - is the Mustang Paste you used the one that IH currently carries? https://www.ironheart.co.uk/footwear/leather-care/mustang-paste.html
From the pictures, it looks like Giles got a more matte finish after applying Obenaufs than Max Power got using Mustang Paste - in the latter case it looks like there's a bit more of a reflective sheen to the leather from the Mustang Paste.
You guys' thoughts would be most appreciated for my own SB jacket which is also made in the natural horse leather. Thanks both in advance!

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if I could get an update on some of these jackets. How are they aging? I am really curious about how @Giles and @Max Power feel about their choice of conditioner. I believe Giles used Obenauf's oil and Maxpower used Mustang Paste. Have you guys reapplied the same product or do you suggest a different route? Any others with conditioning experiences? Would love to see some updated pics as well! Giles, I did see a thread where you tested some different products on veg-tanned leather. Any updated thoughts on how that experiment would translate to this jacket? Thanks! You guys are a great help.

Hi @chucktaylor90 . I did one generous coating with Mustang Paste when I got the jacket and didn't reapply anything since. I would definitely do it again, I only use Mustang paste on all my horsehide jackets. I'll try to take some pictures in the next days
-
@chucktaylor90 Here's mine. To be honest I've worn my black jackets a lot more but you still can see how the colour looks like after 2 years. Like I said, 1 generous amount of mustang paste.
-
@giles I assume that you don't wear it because you are living on the boat now? If you were doing it all over again would you still have used the Obenaufs boot oil? Any other recommendations on how to get it that nice caramel brown color?

Pecards one time. Haven’t taken any recent pics, but it’s darker. Hope that helps.

Just wear it. Don’t over think it.
