Ship John

L is the size I wear in 90% of tops, whether shirts or jackets. In IH I generally tend to go up a size to XL, but there have been lots of exceptions to that. IH jacket wise I've got a IHJ-35 and IH-526LOD in XL, and N1 deck vest in L. Usually I aim for between 22-23 in the chest and 18-19 in the shoulders.
When I initially saw the measurements of the Wills, I thought I might opt for a medium. I decided to email them though, and since Mike is generally the person you see in the pics, I asked what his height and size was — they said he's 5'10" and typically gets a medium in everything SJ. So with that new info, I figured a L was definitely the way to go, as I'm 6'2", similar build to Mike but maybe a tad beefier.

Same question…What size IH do you wear in jackets and what size in Ship John?
I can tell you that I bought the XXL from here and it is perfect for layering a lot, but not so much with tshirt. I wear UHF XXL and XXXL for layering. I have a V2 coming in about 15 months and I think I will size down to XL since it has a lining.
-
Yeah based on what I know about sizing info you post on here, you're generally about a size up from me — I'd say an XL would be the move for you.
-
@popvulture yes...methinks you are correct. Stoked you got yours and hopefully mine will come early like yours did. I love the idea of having both versions, I feel quite fortunate. I'm looking forward to seeing your fit pics when you post 'em!

@popvulture Thank you for the great information and guidance!

Course, man! Always happy to help

@popvulture this is solid info!! Thanks for posting. Seems Mike and I are probably darn near the same in size. Thinking a medium may be the way to go for me.

Love the brass snaps on my indigo Townes. The stitching is a pretty solid match with my IH-777D, too….

Received the jacket, and gotta say it's pretty wild how heavy duty it is. When I picked up the box on my porch I was like goddamn, this thing is a chonk.
Initial impressions: size L is good, almost a little big but I'm only wearing a tee at the moment. Nice to know I've got plenty of room for wearing a sweatshirt or sweater underneath. Getting a long seems like the right move — the sleeves are a bit long for my taste, but per responses to my previous query in this thread, that should shrink up as some creases start to form at the elbows. It feels like it's got so much wax in it, it's almost damp. I know that'll diminish, too.
Will post some pics at some point. Nice to have it arrive right when TX is getting hot, hehe.
How did you chose to size yours again? TTS or down?
I can speak to this as well. I have owned three Wills Jackets and enough Iron Heart jackets to compare. In typical American shirts, jackets and T-Shirts I am generally a Large sometimes an XL. 42-43" chest depending on my current weight and how trim the fit is.
-
In normal long sleeve IH shirts (denim, serge, chambray) I can wear an XL, but for some I size up to XXL, generally because the sleeves are too narrow / small in circumference.
-
In UHFs I need a XXL and sometimes I can get away with a XXXL. XXL is generally my Goldilocks fit for UHFs though.
-
In IH type 3's, I can wear an XL, but it's a very close fit buttoned up - I'm probably better suited to an XXL in a 526J or 526PJ. In the N1 Deck jacket, an XL is perfection.
-
In Ship John shirts, I am between sizes. Large is too small, XL is great in the shoulders and arms, but too big in the body. Be warned, these are NOT one washed like IH, so washing them you can experience shrinkage. Compared to Iron Heart shirts, Ship John are shorter in the arms and longer in the body.
-
For the Wills Jacket, I wear an XL. Much like some IH items, the heavy fabric makes the Wills jacket feel smaller than it is, and it doesn't give or stretch much. I need the XL for the sleeve circumference, and the body is boxy enough to leave room for a layer underneath. I have found that my perfect Wills layering is a UHF and a Cotopaxi Fuego Puffer Vest. I don't have enough room in the arms for a second layer, so the vest adds extra warmth on cold days without trying to force puffy sleeves into the arms.

@Paul9221 thanks, man! My first SJ piece, very pleased with it.

got my confirmation email today!! I'm 6'3 200 and going with L-tall for layering

So how soft do the Wills jackets actually get after some good usage? Obviously it's extremely stiff new, and I know it'll break in but can anyone tell me if they get "soft" and comfortable? It's almost hard to imagine considering how thick and rigid that material is. I've got some well worn waxed jacket from other brands that are soft but they aren't as thick as the Wills.

Yo my V2 Ship John jacket is already in production! It was not due until August 2024. I was reading their email newsletter and went to check my number. Turns out I missed an email from September 7 saying mine was ready and they would not start the jacket until I confirmed. Sweating bullets at this point, I called them. The dude was super chill and said I did not lose my spot in line. An invoice will be sent today or tomorrow. Phew!
I ended up selling my V1 as it felt I was just a tad too big. Hopefully the V2 with a size down will be perfect from XXL to XL. The guy on the phone said it would likely work out fine. Stoked!

@Mizmazzle I just went to look for mine and can't find it
