I’m obsessed with JL’s Olive cal Combat Boots, but have seen so many different recommendations on sizing. I’m a bit confused. JL’s site recommends .5 down from Brannock, Standard and Strange recommends 1 size down. I’d tend to trust the manufacturer but so many other sites say 1 full down as well. I had a pair of Viberg 1035 in 9.5 and felt they were too big. I have Red Wing Moc Toes in 9.5 and they fit fine. I’m wondering if I should go 9 or 9.5 in the Combats? Thanks!

@sweetlou do you own any JL boots already? I’ve been in contact with both S&S and JL customer service and you’re right, they both say exactly what you report.
I tend to lean towards S&S sizing advice. I bought my JL engineers through them. I’m also interested in those combat boots. I’m a size 9 in their engineers and S&S recommend a .5 smaller in the combats. Though I’ve never tried them on before, the last used and the lace up style boot seem to make sense with S&S advice.
Please keep us informed here. Love to get your first hand thoughts of you end up buying those. So damn nice looking.

@Mizmazzle Will do. I actually have JL USN low quarter derbies in 9.5 and they fit nicely. That tracks with SS recommendation to size down a half size for the derbies, so they seem to be accurate in their fit advice.

Back at work living that teacher life in the trenches. Been wearing my nattys pretty regular the last month. Thought about @Nik ’s advice regarding letting the break develop more and keeping the trees out. Them rolls are starting to come in nice I think. Thanks for the idea, bruddah!!

@sweetlou I bought a pair of JL black cats from S&S and ordered 3 sizes to confirm my size, ended up with the 7.5. They are great people. I actually visited the Oakland shop and tried on the olive combats boots. I am an 8E heel-to-ball and 7E heel-to-toe. The last is good if you have wide feet, both the 7.5 and 8 fits very similar IMO

What’s your care regiment? Do you use shoe trees?
-
@Mizmazzle no shoe trees, these pics are right after a brushing and conditioner. I use saphir renovatuer on these. Natty cxl I use that, or Venetian shoe cream. Boots are about 1.5 yrs old

Before I put some wear into these, wanted to get some beauty shots. Captured with a Fujifilm GFX 100S and 110mm f/2 lens.

Beauty shots indeed!!!

@Jepanic are you doing stitchdown patina thunderdome with these?
-
@Nik No, I have a rotation of engineers to slowly go through. I’ll post updates here when they get more wear.
