Scuba anyone?
-
Planning a scuba trip in Puerto Galera, Philippines this April. Was looking at Raja Ampat in Indonesia or Tubbataha in the Philippines but decided to do that another time. Puerto Galera is a 20h flight, plus drive, plus ferry, plus trike, but it's still much easier than those other two locations...

Some of my favourite dives were in the Philippines, @JDelage. Saw thresher sharks off Malapascua and this blue-ringed octopus in Dauin…. Have fun!

@T4920 - wonderful! enjoy it man

Two things happened to me last trip:
- My Suunto computer crapped out on me mid-dive. That meant I had no idea what depth I was at (as I did not have redundancy), and also locked itself for 48 hours, once I had un-crapped it out.
- My pressure gauge crapped out on me (we think that the spring broke).
Both incidents were a little unsettling.
Paula fixed both issues for me at Xmas:
-
Goodbye Suunto and your ridiculously conservative algorithms, and hello Peregrine....
-
And hello new pressure gauge. All sortes of additional info including depth, so I have redundancy on that .....

@JDelage said in Scuba anyone?:
UW photo, I've decided, is really for pros or people who have a lot more time & money than me. I'm taking a GoPro rig with me to Puerto Galera.
100% agree.
We're in an unnatural and inherently dangerous environment. Live in the moment. Do not risk something nasty happening because you are concentrating on taking a crap shot that no one else will be interested in any way....

My instructor had a good rant to us about conservative dive computers earlier today. It was a little outside my level of understanding, but the fact you can be locked out for acting in a way you know to be totally safe must be insanely frustrating..

@Giles - I had my dive computer (which connects to my reg for pressure info) crap out on me on a live-aboard in the middle of the Red Sea. Thank god the crew was able to hook up a gauge and lend me one of their dive computers. I now have a redundant analogically pressure gauge on my reg. I've considered getting the Apple Watch Ultra as a redundant computer but it requires a subscription to be used this way and I really don't see the value prop.

I had the Suunto air pod thingy that “connected” to my Suunto Eon. It was fucking useless and has been sold to another sucker (as has the Eon). I was a 100% Suunto fanboy having never had anything else, but I am no longer. I have a spare analogue gauge which I will take me, but wont bother hooking it up unless I need to

Large tank for my set-up on SAKURA. Will usually use it as a refill station for the Mantus Mini Scuba System I have on board, but can rig it with my conventional rig if I think I need more bottom time....

As I have documented before, I do not take photos underwater. I'd rather take everything in than take shit photos....But a member asked me yesterday if we had seen anything cool. Paula has a penchant for Morays and I get excited with Leaf and Frog Fish. So 3 things we saw yesterday (images from web):
White Mouthed Moray
Leaf Fish - 2 different species

Not sure how common these are, but I was very happy to see a Seal Face Puffer Fish when I was doing my Open Water earlier this year.
I'd chuckled at its cute little face when I saw it in one of the books on the dive boat, so when I encountered it underwater I spent way more time than I should have done staring at it..
