Guitars anyone???
-
If anybody has any leads on luthiers that do a good job on relic stuff, I'm all ears. My Senn is the best I've owned, and I've asked Jeff if he'd do a relic job on another guitar, but didn't hear back (which I took as a no). Some of them are too extreme — I like the sort of Closet Classic / Journeyman level of distress. It's just nice to have a guitar that's sorta had the new knocked off of it. Definitely not the sort of thing I'm willing to do myself (and by that I mean relic it myself, not play the shit out of it until it looks old and vintage. Anybody who's had a new finish guitar knows that will take eons).

@skt I know a guy who's got a Whitfill — he likes it, cool tele. K-Line is also pretty fantastic. I have one of his strats and it's probably my best sounding and playing single coil electric.
-
@popvulture K-line is new to me and just looked them up…St Louis! They look really nice and I’ll have to dig into them. I agree the “closet classic” look is the sweet spot for me too. I have a 50th Anniversary Masterbuilt strat (Todd Krause) that has that look. I’ll get some pics of it and throw them in the mix here when I can.

Did someone mention relic?

Getting up to speed on some mash style bluegrass on the 1934 Gibson L00

@chillmonroe DAMN! That is a purdy guitar. The best Gibson I ever played was a 60's J45. But man this is nice.
-
@jeffgrantMEDIA yeah she’s a dandy. If you’re into slope shoulder dreads, I’ll have to post some stuff on the 1938 J35 and the 1934 Jumbo. To be clear, I don’t currently own all these guitars. I do a lot of catch and release
Right now I’ve got the ‘34 Jumbo, the ‘34 L00, and a sweet 1913 Gibson A4 mandolin
-
@chillmonroe I am going to have to follow your IG. I just scrolled it. I love vintage Gibsons. Wish I had the cash to play that game. I mostly just noodle these days and have halted my guitar-buying addiction. As far as vintage I only currently own a Gibson 78' Deluxe and a 76' Strat. But mostly just play my Taylor. It's a 2004, but the best-sounding guitar I played in a LONG search. The only thing I played better was that vintage J45 at a guitar center in Philly 20 years ago.
-
@IH-GARY man that’s awesome — looks like a Nachocaster level relic. What is it?
-
@popvulture It’s a Custom Shop Nocaster blackguard - it’s pretty gnarly!
-
@jeffgrantMEDIA hell yeah I’ll follow you back. Guitar playing denim heads unite
But for sure, vintage guitars are pricy but as long as you have a handle on the current market value and buy at or under it you won’t get hurt. And there’s also the potential to flip and make a few bucks to fund more IH stuff
-
@chillmonroe I need to sell off my 78 Deluxe, pay off some bills and get a few new IH pieces! haha

Just repaired a crack in the back of my 1934 Jumbo. First time ever attempting something like this.
Got some guidance from my luthier buddy. Humidified it to close it up a bit for a couple weeks, then pushed on it to open it up just ever so slightly. Injected it with a super specific type of super glue, waited like 10 seconds and went at it with some shell wool followed by a buffing cloth.
Here’s the before and after pics. I knew it was there and I still can’t find it in the after. The pucker factor in this was real and I’m super stoked on the result 🤌🤌

Oh and here’s the guitar

Just got this in this morning. Wow, this one is very, very good.
(I've become a bit of an ES style convert in recent years. Played super strats for a long time, then Les Pauls for many years. Just getting old I suppose ) -
@JunkPants gorgeous man, love the maple

My trusty Jazz bass that has seen hundreds of gigs and multiple areas of the world.

Here’s my beloved custom shop 1950s thinline telecaster/nocaster. Any tele fans will know that fender didn’t make thinline teles in the 50s but this one was imagined as what they would have made if they were doing thinlines in the 50s.. I don’t get to play it much these days, because I have kids.
-
@VoodooRay such a cool guitar. I have always wanted a thinline Tele. Is it pretty light?
