It's actually a very interesting situation. The approaches to Southampton are notoriously treacherous and very busy. The ship would have had a captain and a pilot on board. The captains primary responsibility is the boat, but he abrogates that responsibility to the pilot when the pilot is on board and the pilots primary responsibility is the port.
Captain. We're taking a list, we need to turn around and go back to port
Pilot. No feckin way. If we do that and sink in the channel we will block the whole port of Southampton
Captain. But it's my boat and there's a load of pretty new cars on board
Pilot. I don't give a feck. Park it on that sandbank. NOW -
