my lomo lca is officially bust after some coffee spills, yet another one. I've not been looking but came across a Canonet QL17 that seems like a handy replacement. does anybody have any thoughts on it? would like to hear some feedbacks/comparisons..
I've had a Canon AE1 before which I've loaned to me cousin. that's a little bulky to my liking nowadays.

For folks who've been to Japan or similar places, will I regret bringing a monochrom camera as my only camera?
I'll have a cell phone too take quick snaps and have done other big trips with only this camera. Bringing both I guess is an option but really wanting to streamline and also considering just bringing a 50mm.
-
@pechelman 50mm is decent for Japan's city streets, depending on your style. I've always found 50mm to be decent for street shooting. out in nature might be a different story.
monochrom or not, really depends on what you like. Japan tends to be colourful with it bright city lights which might make good pictures. but depending on the mood, monochrome can be pretty too, especially in the day..
-
@pechelman Literally picked up a 50mm and started learning some basic photography purely because I have an upcoming trip to Japan and wanted to get some decent picture not on my crap phone camera haha
-
Thanks, guys. All the pictures I look at online seem to be in color focusing on the bright colors of japan from the torii gates to commercialism, but that's probably because they're on travel blogs etc. I'm certainly no stranger to shooting monochrom/50 with this camera in similar places and I do love its ability to work better in low light. Thought there might be a high chance someone here was in Japan recently with their camera gear to chime in or point to someone else photoblog with lots of mono images.

@pechelman this is the blog that inspired me: https://msogavt.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/back-from-japan-part-1-the-fed-2-wjupiter-8/
he went entirely monochrome and came out pretty well

@louisbosco love mine. Its my usual go to for casual shots and even hiking/back packing trips. The RF patch is quite visible given the age but aside from that its reliable as hell. Only real complaints is the lack of lens options and shutter speed max 1/500. DM if you wanna chat further!
Here's QL G3 next to an AE1. Angle slightly skews the size but it's definitely easy to lug around. Here's some sample flicks:

Absolutely loving those shots @J-IV @Ross
I love the analogue look, but never tried to actually shoot manual.
Maybe I should…Here’s some B&W from Hamburg. Sadly didn’t make it in time for the party, but still enjoying some free days in this characterful city.

@weftyarn l really like the canal shot and the window sitter
-
@Ross @J-IV okay I think you got me. Any recommendations for a starting kit? Which is the system where you get the best glass at a reasonable price?
@steelworker the window one is also my favorite. I love to just point at open windows and see what happens.
@Jett129 thanks mate! I’m on a real B&W roll lately. That stones track perfectly matches the shot. Love it!

@weftyarn After some reading I went with a FED-2, basically a old Ukrainian Leica clone, overall so far it's been extremely solid and is quite pretty to look at on my shelf when not using, which is always a nice plus.
I know the Kiev-4a is also recommended if you prefer the Contax style cameras although it's a smidge more expensive and a bit chunkier/heavier. The old soviet cameras are very cost effective for just giving it a try to see if you like it without breaking the bank.

@J-IV said in Photograph and Camera talk:
@weftyarn it all depends on your budget, my friend. And the kind of shooting you do
Body + 35mm full frame equivalent lens for street photography at ~1k€ would be awesome. Doable?

spent the weekend reflecting on my prior question and took a look back at a few trips. 90% sure i'll be taking the monochrom, 50, and 28. Granted, Hamburg is a little more monochromatic to begin with, but I had a good supplement of cell phone color images that I'm not going to "miss" things anyway. Just going to have fun and take pictures as the opportunity presents. Sharing a few from the aforementioned trip, though this was in May, before the party.
