@maxximum That absolutely sounds like something I would like to try. The malting of grain is something I've overlooked. I'll have to dive into that.
I like my American Rye to actually be of lower rye content and have a good mix of corn, etc.
and I like my bourbon to have some good rye kick too, I think it rounds it out nicely.High West Campfire is an interesting blend of Rye, Scotch, and Bourbon that I think is blended pretty well.
I enjoy Japanese hybrid style whiskies that are bourbon and scotch inspired too but they can sometimes be a little light.
-
@WhiskeySandwich If you ever come across this I think it would be right up your alley with 39% corn in the mashbill. My favorite when I can get it. Around $50 is a pretty square price.
-
@Jett129 I will def keep an eye out for that. I'm a HH fan and thats a good mashbill. Thanks for the tip! and thats my favorite review site btw
Update: just realized my hunch about the name was correct, this is a local MD spirit. I've not liked our local whiskies but I will def give this a chance to break that trend.

Cheers guys! All the talking about Kyrö today made me pour a glass

@scooter When I first looked at the picture I didn’t realize that the bottle of Whistle Pig was a Single Barrel bottle. I once had one of those and it had been finished in a bourbon barrel. Needless to say one of the best Rye experiences I’ve ever had. Does yours say if it’s been refinished?
No finishing. Just a 10 year single barrel.

@scooter I enjoyed the Penelope and I find MGP to have a low success rate. I do enjoy most Whistlepig but anything but Piggyback is pretty expensive. If I can’t find Sazerac, I go for Michter’s or the Turkey. Haven't had Michters in a hot minute though.
While, Whistlepig can be pricey, I'm usually on board with anything priced $10/year aged. I got the 10 year for $90. It's pushing it, but it's just under. Anything 12 years and older, I'll go to $15/year.
As far as other ryes go, I like Rittenhouse for cocktails, and as @Jett129 has already referenced, my daily will always be Pikesville. I've kept a bottle on my shelf for years, now... long before I started chasing Bourbons.

@Mizmazzle I thought the Universal Password was Swordfish.

Tried this for the first time tonight. Drinkable is a word that’s sometimes used to describe beverages such as this. Local liquor store had it on sale for $60,which is ridiculous. I’ve had a few of The Oceans over the years, and always felt, like you were paying for the story. I know I’m paying for a story with this one as well, but I feel as if I’m at least breaking even.
-
@Jett129 gotta say i'm still not sold on that Ocean.... hahaha
The $60 price point gets you a lot of good options, and I usually see it for around $80 in my area. -
@WhiskeySandwich I’ve seen this one for $80 as well, and would not have dropped that much money on it,but it’s a rye,was double barreled, one of them was toasted, and they got me. Fortunately I ended up being very happy with my purchase, which isn’t always the case. I think it’s way better than the bourbon versions I’ve had.
