@goosehd Yeah, no stunt riding for me! I stick with the 'safer' stuff. I've got nothing to prove.
-
@WhiskeySandwich I’ve done my share of stupid stuff, but on two wheels I keep myself in check. Too many things to go wrong to roll the dice on life looking cool.
-
I play it safe these days, can’t huck or send it like I used to could. Kids keep me in check. Will say though, a pothole on the hardtail is about the same as any lowered bike. And that’s coming from a dude with herniated disc.

Some HOT sportster talk! For those in the know, what years are best and which to avoid? Was told 91-2003 are the best.
Been thinking about a 97 1200 close to me with low miles. Peanut tank, 39mm dual disc upgrade. Grandpa owned.
Thoughts @Dmart @WhiskeySandwich -
Mostly looking for a fun little ripper. 10” risers, no fairing, maybe 2+ over. 13” performance shocks in the back and chain conversion.

I’d say they refined the design the later you go but they’re all pretty much the same. we’re working on a chop on my buddys 99 and it’s pretty smooth so far. If you have a good carb and the thing isn’t a basket case anything can be reliable with the right tlc.
-
I highly recommend parts from Lowbrow and TC Bros, all have been fantastic. I gave both of them way too much money lol
-
@Autorotate sorry to rant but I could talk about this stuff for days! That year range you’re looking at is good and simple because they’re all carbs and on the rigid mounts. After that the frames changed to rubber mounted engines and a few years later they added fuel injection. This makes it a lot harder to do the old school, simple machine thing. Also seeing as they ditched the evo motor for the new liquid cooled one, I’d say get what you can because they’ll only get harder to find and more expensive.
-
@WhiskeySandwich i am picking up what you’re laying down!! Love it. Yes, I only want a carb bike. So much more simple. One of my favorite bike maintenance chores is carb rebuilding/tuning. I’m no pro, but I like the research, the tools, the fine tooth adjustments with jets and the settings, etc. once it’s dialed, forget about it!
The 97 I’m interested in is bright blue over chrome. She’s good looking for sure.

The worst day ever can be cured with a 10 minute ride on a bike. Even talking about it puts a smile on my face!
Thank you gents for a great day!!

@scooter Are you out on the roads yet? We had a beautiful day a week ago, but there was still a ton of shite on the roads. This week is cool but after a few good rainfalls in the past couple of days, I'm itching to go out and might go out to make sure everything's working...

@Autorotate
cant'remeber the years, but stick with 5 speeds. and preferrably factory 1200
