IHJ-35-BLK - Japanese Horsehide Rider’s Jacket - Black (Tea-Core Dyed)
-
That's a good point, @Giles. And I assume that I'll lose about a half-inch once it is broken in from how the sleeves crease.
-
Correct.
And if there is a tendency for the sleeves to fall down, put a Panerai on each wrist. @BOTC_OLLY will tell you how that solves the problem
-
That seems the most sensible way to solve the problem.

Hey @Wlemon sorry I didn't reply to you sooner. As I mentioned I wear an XL in this and generally the same in all IH jackets including the 35, 54, and 49 . I wear an XXL in practically all IH work/western shirts but needed to size down for the jackets. I also have fairly long arms and still find the XL to fit well.
I can wear the jackets comfortably over most everything with the exception of UHFs though so I suppose it will depend on how you view layering and fit. I think this looks best a bit closer to the body IMO.
Hope this helps and good luck with the choice, can't go wrong with the 35!

Thank you for the reply @Manticore. I went with the XXL in this bad boy. I saw that @Alex wore a XXL and @giles wore an XL, so I decided to go with with the larger size as I seem to be an XXL in everything that Iron Heart makes. I'm pretty sure I went the right route. Will know shortly. Either way, I will be posting all over this thread so enough!

I'm curious what you all know about chrome-tanned leather. I know this jacket uses it, as it is stated in the description. After doing research online (I know, a dubious proposition), I understand the process and some of the benefits, but I'm curious as to why it was used on this jacket. From what I can tell, vegetable-tanned leather lasts longer and can develop more patina. Anyway, all of this is coming from someone who doesn't have the jacket yet. I'm sure I won't have these questions when I handle it in person. I'm just curious to know more about leather.

Regarding sizing: im an XL in this as I am in practically all other IH tops like shirts and jackets. The fit is perfect in all dimensions, even the belly as the jacket is slim zipped, but with the side adjusters you get extra room.
The sleeves are long but as you can narrow them when zipped up it doesn't bother me.The leather itself seems to keep its shine longer than the veg tan leathers I have. Also I noticed that the patina seems to be different. The underlying leather is a darker brown than on my Flat Head and Fine Creek jacket, evo seems to happen more on single points of abrasion as compared to a more even fade on the other jackets. I'll try to show pictures with a comparison.

@Wlemon
Here's the fcl compared to ihj35
-
And finally the flat Head. This is a bit more similar to iron heart
-
Thanks for the input @Max Power. Yes, I can imagine this being much different than Fine Creek in terms of the leather. It seems like the 35 kind of "chips" more than it browns like the Fine Creek. It seems like that fits the style of the 35. Love the comparison shots! Thank you.

My pleasure. I still want to see a ihj35 that has been worn hard for years. I'm sure it will look fantastic.

Man. The quality of this jacket is out of this world. The leather and it’s smell is the same — maybe even better — than Shinki. The fit is spot on. I was worried about the arm length, but it doesn’t seem too much of an issue. In all, the jacket feels bespoke. If I thought my Iron Heart problem was bad before I discovered their leather, I don’t want to know what’s next.

I've been saying this for years, people look at me like I'm a fucking moron that I dare even think that, let alone say it….
Would like to hear what @Max Power thinks… I have four different Japan made leather jackets from three makers... 2 FCL, TFH and IH. All four used hides are different I don’t know wether one of those makers uses leather from Shinki tannery, but I just can say I like them all and I really can’t say that one of them is better then the others... just different

I think certain brands get a reputation and that reputation gets thrown about, especially when folks don't know much about the topic. For example, I don't know much about leather and leather jackets. But I've heard that Shinki is among the best, and if I tell folks they are the best, few will argue with me. Basically, I'm bullshitting my way through a conversation. Since this tannery doesn't have a "name," it doesn't get passed around the same way on the internet, which is a shame because it is so damn nice. What's even more galling is the fact that this jacket would cost 500 USD or more if it used Shinki (I image, based on Himel and Buco's pricing) In short, this leather is amazing, so is the fit and construction.

The 35 looks amazing Will!!
I’m contemplating a downsized 35 as my spring jacket..
Perhaps the Perforated one is more my suit?

It really is an amazing jacket. It's also not too warm. It was 70F in LA today and it was fine to wear. Not sure if the perforated cafe is still in production, but I can't imagine this not working for you or anyone.

@Wlemon congrats to an awesome fit, wear it in good health!
@Chap I find it difficult to compare my Schott 519, Ihj35, Flat Head DPocket, FCl Leon 2mm and the Simmons Bilt. All have a unique and different character, the leathers also are very different. For example you'd think that the (I think) drum dyed steer hide of the Schott can't compete, but when I wear it I feel like it's an awesome and well aged jacket. Actually I think that every one of the jackets feels awesome when I wear it. In terms of just the leather I would say however that out of the box the flat Head is my favorite and I think it actually is shinki. It smelled the nicest, was very smooth and shiny yet you could already tell that there is a hidden structure waiting to give a great patina. The fcl looked flat and not as interesting by far when New, but now the patina is my favorite of all them. The ihj 35 has kept a lot of the shine and feels thicker and heavier than the shinki fh which is the same weight.
So you see it's hard to choose a favorite or even compare them. Regarding the weight, smell and patina I think I'd choose the flat Head or maybe a fcl 1.3mm which I don't own yet.
