White's Boots
-
Ill probably be pulling the trigger on some whites this week. Likely pick up a pair of the black cxl oxfords and custom rip-off of these:
Thinking about subbing the leather for brown and black french calf, What do you guys think? I enjoy polishing my shoes and boots to a high shine so its rather french calf or dress leather. You guys have any pics or ideas about pros and cons?
That's a real cool boot! Any idea what the original leathers are? Looks like black CXL, brown oil tan and black (or dark brown?) bullhide to me.

Its brown and black cxl with black bullhide backstay and counter. My version would be all black and brown french calf and have brown edges and a roll top. Probably a regular last too, that one is swing and it actually doesn't look bad in the pic but I'm not sure how much id end up liking it in real life…

Well I decided to temporarily shelve my Alden's and work on my White's. It hasn't been easy getting used to the arch support, but just out of the blue they are super comfy. I walked about three miles in them yesterday and no soreness or foot fatigue. Needless to say, I finally get why these are so popular.

Absolute stunners…..but then I am biased.

Warning: Question barrage…
I'd like a pair like this but with the Vibram 700 sole and natural colored midsole. This is what I came up with on Build a Boot:
White's Smoke Jumper Standard Last

Leather 2: Black Chrome Excel by Horween
Toe Vamp Leather: Black Chrome Excel by Horween
Toe Cap Leather: None
Celastic Toe Box: Single
Safety Toe: No Thanks
Heel Counter Leather: Black Chrome Excel by Horween
Height: 6"
Upper (Shaft) Leather : Black Chrome Excel by Horween
Leather Liner: Black
Sole Trim: Standard Trim
Top: Rolled
Back Stay Leather: Black Chrome Excel by Horween
Pull Loop: Yes
Eyelet Color: Nickel
Eyelet Configuration : Eyelet
Top Garment: Eyelet
Lace Design: Lace to Toe
Lace: Leather
False Tongue: None
Sole: Vib 700
Half Slip: No
Heel Shape: Block
Heel Height: Standard
Last: #38 Swing Last
Midsole: Standard
Midsole/Edge Color: Natural
Size - Length: 9.5
Size - Width: EEAm I missing anything? Not really sure what to do with the "Last" option, since I've never owned a pair of whites before. Not sure if I should go 6" or 8" height either, but I guess that's personal preference.
I have extremely wide feet. My Indy boots are 9.5 EEE and could be wider. I know White's run a bit wide, so EE should work? If I wear a 9.5 in Wolverine 1km and Alden Indy/etc, should 9.5 in White's be alright?

False Tongue: None----------I'd get it - you don't have to use it - your sample pic has one - they don't charge extra
Sole: Vib 700
Half Slip: No
Heel Shape: Block--------Most smoke jumpers have the standard or cuban/curved heel - I personally prefer it
Heel Height: Standard
Last: #38 Swing Last -----Specify "standard" last, not #38
Midsole: Standard
Midsole/Edge Color: Natural
Size - Length: 9.5-----------should be OK
Size - Width: EE-------------"might" be be OK - I don't think they run that wide, maybe just a bitAm I missing anything? Not really sure what to do with the "Last" option (STANDARD), since I've never owned a pair of whites before. Not sure if I should go 6" or 8" height either, but I guess that's personal preference. (EITHER - 6" IS PLENTY HIGH & EASIER TO HANDLE IMO - TALLER JUST ADDS MORE WEIGHT)

Awesome winter boots Shane, they will see you through many winters to come.
Aho, classic looking boots there buddy, they will look great for a very long time.

I would suggest the Bounty Hunter set up. It's my go to option for last/look. It's just a Smoke Jumper look with a Semi-Dress Last. The Swing Last has the upturned toebox if that's what you're after. I wear an 8.5E in the Alden TruBalance last and prefer an 8.5D in the Bounty Hunter set up. But for every person that gives sizing advice there will be another person that will say different. I would go to Graham Fowler and try on the White's Semi-Dress they have. I doubt they have your size but will probably have at l;east a 9.5D. That will give you an idea on how to size, even though I'm sure you're at least an E or EE.
As far as height, I prefer 7in. I've had 6 and 8, the 6 was too short(feels too tight at the top with laces wrapped around) and the 8 is too tall(two extra holes at the top that I never use). I mean it's not a huge difference, but with the way I tie my laces 7in just seems to make the most sense.
Also, I would email someone at Bakers to give you the best advice about sizing and lasts. orders@bakershoe.com

I'm guessing those are working boots, not walking around town and city boots like 99.9% of us use them for though.
