Clothes altering as a hobby

I was wondering if anyone had experience altering clothes as a hobby (tapering, hemming, repairs etc.)? I have absolutely zero sewing machine experience and my hand sewing experience is limited to sewing punk band patches on my vests in high school haha My main question is where do I start? What is a good all around sewing machine to get? What are some good resources on the topic?

Get yourself an old Singer 201-2 or 201-3, get it rewired.

Pick up a pile of old clothes for pennies from the charity shop and practice on them.

If it dosn't work out for you the rewired 201 will sell for more than your costs!

Thanks! I'll look into it! When you say rewired do you mean electrically or is that a sewing term?

Electrically - it will be at least 60 years old and the wiring will be past it's best if original. Getting electrocuted kind of spoils the fun!
