IHJ-49 - Split Steer Modified Type III Jacket - Black or Brown
-
I own one of these as well. Since I live in Southern California, it does not see a lot of rain and haven't had to do anything with it in the way of maintenance.
A couple of data points not directly related to this jacket, but maybe helpful. I do have rough out on a couple pairs of Wesco boots and they have seen some rain/weather. I use a suede brush from time to time and do not apply any treatment to them. They are holding up pretty darn well. Additionally, TJ at The Shop Vancouver has commented a couple times on how he takes care of his rough out chore shirts. He openly states that most of his leather and rough out jackets sees a lot rain. His approach is to maintenance is no fuss, do nothing and beat the shit out of it approach. Based on seeing the many many pictures and videos he posts of his gear, it looks like they are holding up well to the conditions with cool looking patina.

thanks for the feedback... I'm not too far away from Vancouver, so as much as I will be trying to avoid getting it soaked it will be pretty much impossible to entirely avoid getting wet some times. Good to know that the guys from The Shop don't think much is needed. I will probably eventually get some of that Saphir spray, but it is nice to know I won't need it for a while. I intend to have this jacket super long term and I take care of my things, but I also don't view my cloths as museum pieces and prefer them looking like they have been used!
Probably going to avoid DWR style coatings with their PFAS because that is what the emergency poncho is for! May not be stylish, but it does the job in a pinch! -
I want to report that this jacket is amazingly warm. I live in Chicago and this keeps me warm in 20F degree weather. I was not expecting that. This can truly be a year round jacket.

Any eta on a restock in brown?
-
@Mizmazzle what allegedly causes this shrinking?
I'd like to grab a brown one day, tried it on in Hamburg and it's fantastic.
-
@Mizmazzle yep, they are in the works, but no ETD

What's the durability like on the brown version of this jacket? Does it require lots of special care or can it be used daily and still look good? I just bought the black horsehide version of this jacket and looking for other Iron Heart jackets that have long sleeves as I have long arms. The other models of leather jackets seem to have shorter sleeves and there is a brown XL available at a store that I could order.
If anyone has both the black horsehide Type III and this one in the same size, do you find the fit is the same on them?
-
@jdixon1974 requires no special treatment. Tough as nails, tolerates rain, unfuckwithable.

@neph93 hey buddy. When you bought your split steer did you go with your normal UHF size? I’m wondering if the thickness of the hide makes up for some of the larger measurements like shoulder. For example, I like an 18” shoulder in my shirts. Would a 19” shoulder in this jacket be countered by the thickness of leather at all?
-
@Mizmazzle not Neph, but I take L/XL in UHFs and felt kinda swamped by the Split Steer XL.
Gonna be a matter of personal preference, but looking at the chart I feel like this has been sized with consideration for the heft of the fabric in mind.
