IHSB-BB-NAT - Natural Horsehide Jacket - The Bareback
-
@Mizmazzle man congrats! But also that's a huge bummer they won't be using this leather anymore — did she say anything about a replacement?

@popvulture i feel exactly the same as you about the leather. I’ve been dreaming about a jacket of this leather for so long. Finally was ready to make a custom Tailgunner happen. After lots of talking with Deb over the last year or so I told her I was ready. But she mentioned they were having QC issues with the tannery that made that leather so they aren’t using them anymore. She sent me samples of the new natural leathers they are currently working with to see if I wanted to try one of those. None of the samples was what I was hoping for.
I stapled them to the fence for a couple weeks to see how they would age:
Same order both pics:
Left: Mustang Natural
mid: Steerhide natural
Right: Blattwerk Natural horse hideDidn’t like the way the mustang aged color wise. Same with the steer. The Blattwerk is really soft and kinda spongy. Not the texture I wanted in this jacket, though it seems very nice and easy to wear. Actually the Blattwerk had the best water resistance. Got a fair amount of rain over the two and a half weeks pegged to the fence. The blattwerk is still soft and really smooth. The others are a bit crunchier. They are as wrinkly as they are because I was twisting and pinching and manipulating the leather on all the samples everyday.
All said and done. I really wanted the old Natty HH used in the earlier jackets. Soooo….
Love the soft velvety hand of this leather. Just gorgeous!!

@Mizmazzle Damn man that thing looks so good! Congrats on snagging one and looking forward to seeing the evo
-
@Mizmazzle serious jacket envy, nice pickup
-
@steelworker thanks dawggie!! It’s really exceeded my expectations!
-
Man looks perfect @Mizmazzle ! I’m straight up green!
Can’t wait to see the next iteration of this with the new leather per @Alex ’s comment, been itching for the right replacement for my Mr Freedom Campus I sold. Putting good evo on veg tan is almost as fun a pastime as fading denim…

@popvulture yeah man. Honestly, I got kinda lucky on the timing I think. I’d been doing a lot of research and had been talking with Deb a bunch. If I hadn’t been gearing up toward this jacket for the last year I would have had no idea things would develop the way they did with the leather. Then seeing the one last large left….I’ll do my best to do it justice!!

Here’s a question where I think the answer is no…but I’m looking at it hang in the sun right now and wondering if too much sun is a bad thing. It’s tanning up quite nicely already.
Question: will leaving it to tan for a couple hours a day while it’s been around 98 degrees result in anytype of shrinkage? Been doing this everyday for the last week or so. Should I be careful with how much I leave it to hang in the sun?

@Mizmazzle it's skin it will tan : act accordingly
