Random Rants

This week I was off work with tonsillitis, went to see my doctor who gave me an anti biotic to clear it up. Due to my fucked up immune system I also get allergy type reactions when my immune system is low (swellings and stuff, basically my body massively overreacts to infections), went back to the doctor and he gave me steroids to clear that up.
My curious nature forced me to google the medications to check if they reacted with each other and I was shocked to find that combined they have a life threatening reaction, the anti biotic dramatically strengthens the steroid which leads to over dose.
So I can take one or the other, do I keep the tonsillitis or the allergy type reaction….decision, decisions....
Conclusion. My doctor is a fucking idiot.
Serious - Use Alternative
Possible serious or life-threatening interaction. Monitor closely. Use alternatives if available.
clarithromycin oral and prednisone oralclarithromycin oral will increase the level or effect of prednisone oral by affecting hepatic/intestinal enzyme CYP3A4 metabolism.

@mega. It might be worth asking if there is an anti-biotic and steroid combination that does not have the interaction you describe. There are so many anti-biotic options available, I suspect they can adjust one to work with the other.
p.s. happened to a relative of mine too. Had a multi-prescription interaction that sent them to the ER. I don't understand why there are not automatic flags in a database that indicate the interaction issues with multi-prescriptions.

maybe he didnt know/remembered you were on antibiotics and gave you the steriods… usually if i've to go back to a doctor, i'll let them know what meds i'm still on so that they wouldn't give one that would have any adverse reaction while taking the other.

I'm glad overprotective dipshit parents are allowing their idiotic superstitions to put entire populations at risk from diseases we shouldn't have to worry about anymore. The whole lot should be sterilized.

This! ^
Edit: although sterilisation might be taking it a little too far.

I saw a doctor at a walk in clinic in early January with leg and back pain. Was given a bottle of anti inflammatory drugs and was told it will go away with rest. A month later it hasn't, only worse. This past weekend a CT scan revealed a severely herniated L5-S1 requiring surgery ASAP. Definitely NOT something that will just "go away". I can barely walk, sciatic pain is absolutely miserable. Be careful with your back!
Always get a second opinion for the serious stuff.
