Random Rants

For the first time ever, customs have now charged me a fee based on not the value of the goods (I had added a Paypal payment for 10$ to the package), but on the total sum of the goods (10$) PLUS POSTAGE (110$)… So I had to pay 42€ because the lad had paid that much to ship it...
They're seriously getting on my proverbial tits...

They were only able to do it cause the box contained alcohol… Otherwise they can't do jack shit if I add a "proof of payment" for 10$... Not even if shipping's 1.000.000$... If it contains alcohol, they can charge from the first $... Otherwise goods whose value are less than 15$ are completely tax-exempt...
I'm now having some cans of coffee shipped to me... It's bourbon barrel aged but non-alocholic... Can't wait for the epic struggle that will undoubtedly ensue with customs...

you paid for more shipping than the product?!?!?! that's usually where i draw the line..

I'd like to preface this rant by saying I have nothing against panhandlers. I know a lot suffer from mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, bad luck, etc.
Anyway, I get off an exit ramp and see the same old timer i've seen for the last 6 months. He has a sign that says something about having been in a coma and also being 3 months sober. He spots me smoking a cig and asks for a couple, to which I oblige. He then asks me what kind they are and I tell him American Spirits. I make my own with AS tobacco so when he looked at the cigarette and didn't see the AS logo stamped in the side he assumed I was lying and tossed them back to me about them not being American Spirits. My response was, "oh, so you're being picky now?" He then apologizes and points to a scar on his head and mentioned being 3 months sober, even though he's been panhandling the same corner with the same sign for 6 months. That was a true wtf moment for me.

I can empathize…. Have had a homeless person decline my offer to buy them lunch, because they only wanted money for booze. I have had a homeless person toss a sandwich I bought for them back to me because there was mayo on it. I have been called a cheapskate by a homeless person because I only gave them $3 (I don't carry cash on me so it was literally every dollar I had).
Should never let the bad apples discourage you from trying to help but it doesn't make dealing with unreasonable humans any easier.

I'm torn giving panhandlers money. We have a big heroin problem and I dont want to contribute to it but I dont want someone's car window getting smashed for the coins in the cupholder either.

that's kind of where i'm at. On the one hand, I don't want to contribute to someone's addiction, be it alcohol or drugs, but at the same time, I know there are people out there that are truly down on their luck and need help. I remember seeing a woman about a month ago holding up a sign that said something about being a single mother, need help. She genuinely had that look of shame on her face, so in that moment I felt bad for her. Sadly, I never carrry cash so I had nothing to give her, otherwise I would have.
As a parent of a 4 yo I can't imagine what it must be like to be homeless, jobless, penniless and without food, let alone not having the means to care for a child. I think there are a lot of barriers for the homeless to overcome finding gainful employment or a place to live. When my son goes on his tantrums asking for toys and such I sometimes remind him that there are children out there that are homeless and have nothing. I don't know that he fully grasps the idea that you need money to survive and that not everyone is fortunate.

The funniest sign I saw a panhandler carrying was one that said, "why lie? I need beer money."
