IHSH-33-OD - 12oz Selvedge Denim Western Shirt - Indigo Overdyed Black
-
Hi All,
I am in a bit of a sizing pinch. I dabble in powerlifting and so while I don't look extraordinary… shoulders and chest a bit beefier than most.
My chest measures 21.5" and my shoulders 18" off of my favorite shirt. Favorite shirt has a little give but definitely slim fit. When I raise my arms from the side vertically, I can feel the fabric restrict but still allow me to comfortably fully raise my arms vertically.
So my height is 5'5" if that helps.
My guess is that I am probably not a SM, although I can probably get in it. A MD and LG is probably where I need to make a decision. From looking at the chart, it feels like the difference in a MD and LG is quite modest.
Any tips? Right now, I would err on LG just for the comfort and the possibility it might shrink even a eensy teensy bit (versus i doubt it would ever stretch).
Thanks, all!

Someone more knowledgeable will surely chip in, but generally speaking, don't size down on p2p. Large would seem to be the pick of the bunch for you if you like 'em slim-fitting but do consider the length as well; I like this kind of shirts to fit slim and just a touch long, but ymmv and boxier fits are also popular.

Thank you all for the help!
I went with the L ultimately as I really thought about based off your advice and photos. My shoulders will fit the L. As long as those seams sit where they should on my body - the rest of the measurements are modest enough from the M that it should not make a difference. The only measurement that is over an inch difference from M to L is the chest, which i come in at 21.5 anyway!

Hi there, first of all, this shirt will not shrink at all. It is over-dyed and that is quite an aggressive process that strips all the shrinkage out of a material. It may stretch a little, but that will only be in the areas put under stress (so shoulders and chest) and it won't be much as the amount of material involved isn't a lot.
You should also consider the fabric of this shirt as a 12oz it is quite a solid item. Going too small can be a problem with this heavy a shirt.
Finally I think that getting the fit right on the chest first is the best move. If you fit that correctly then the rest should drape of form to your body after a while. Good luck.

Thank you neph93!
I did not consider the heftiness of the fabric as much as I should have. I’ve measured a work shirt I also enjoy wearing that closer resembles the fabric as opposed to my favorite shirt is a chambray button down.
So when I ordered, my IH sales person said the shirt they have is actually 18.5 shoulders and 22 p2p. My work shirt is actually 18.5 as well and my chest is 21.5 on both so I am satisfied. When I move my arms around with the work shirt, the heavier fabric acts a lot differently than the chambray button down so I think I ordered the L correctly.
I’ll update later this week when I get it. Hopefully future buyers will find this exchange useful!

Looking forward to hearing/seeing how it goes @selvedgejack

I am not sure why there are not more posts about this shirt. It is so awesome in person. I have the IHSH-178, which is a beast, but this holds its own. I'd love to see more pictures of a couple months wear.

Thanks!

I've been wearing the shirt more often. Everyone mistakes it for a jacket but hey that's Iron Heart for you.

I understand that the overdyeing process makes this shirt a size smaller than it otherwise would be, which presumably accounts for Sam taking an L instead of the usual M. But then what accounts for Giles taking two sizes larger than Sam rather than the usual one? (I ask because 'one size larger than Giles' seems to be a pretty good rule for me!)
