Random Rants

That sucks @adam313 . AD was one of the factors in my Mom's death.
Doug Ng is on the money, there are a lot of support groups out there and please take advantage of them, it's easy to be overwhelmed by AD -
Will we ever learn that the planet we live on is a fragile place and needs to be treated with respect and care?….I thought that CV may have made people a tad more aware of that fragility.....

Humankind keeping it classy.

Honestly, the planet isn't fragile. It's been around billions of years and survived far worse than humanity has inflicted on it, and it will continue on after we go extinct. At this rate, relatively soon, and well deserved.

Chris for the win

Just because something is resilient does not mean it should be treated with disregard IMO
Agreed. I look at like we had our chance and punted.

Never saw that before. I've never really thought Carlin was funny. Insightful about how idiotic people are, which always made him interesting, though.

@AdamJ absolutely. As a species we have the capacity to be incredible, or devastating. We don't have to have a race to the bottom.
Individually we are insignificant to the planet, just worm food, as a swarm, we are a plague that strips it bare. We have become convinced by those with vested interest that is the price that must be paid for progress… Progress meaning the aspiration we are sold by marketing people.
We can be better, we can aspire to be different. Us men can be the worst. We seem to confuse masculinity, self-determination, and autonomy as an arrogant right not to be told what to do. We then become our own worst enemies. It is OK not to aspire to be the alpha in every situation. We don't have to repeat the mistakes of our parents, parents, parents.
There, random rant.

Depends of course….CEO of BP recently decided to aim to migrate his company to carbon neutral, a few individuals founded Friends of the Earth, Greta went on strike etc..

I'm in the process of interviewing for one of the big tech companies in Silicon Valley.
The process has been a first round technical screen, which I somehow passed. The next week I've got two coding sessions, one on design, and a behavioural interview.
The technical screen and the coding interviews next week are all based around algorithmic questions. There's are websites such as leetcode that have examples of the sorts of problems that I'll be faced with.
The trouble is that the standardised questions mean that a cottage industry has grown up around preparing for this interviews, and as a result candidates are expected to spend a significant amount of time preparing. A hundred hours was mentioned to me…
Interview three will be behavioural. I'm autistic and never get on with these sorts of things.
Interview four will be a design exercise. From what I can gather from watching a YouTube video, this is likely to have vague or ambiguous assumptions. Guess what people on the spectrum don't get on with?
Still, it's a great opportunity, particularly for someone whose career died in a ditch five or six years ago. It's just a shame that the Coronavirus thing is going on, as I'd have been heading to SF next week.

Best of luck to you, Graeme!!
I’m certainly very far from that world, but my impression is that the more forward thinking startups may have someone like a diversity officer on their HR staff. This may mean that the company will be able to put a little bit of thought into working with staff who isn’t neurotypical. Are you working with a recruiter? Would it be worth mentioning these things during the interview process?
Like I said, I don’t know jack—but I do wish you all the best.
