They finish CXL with neatsfoot which is probably why Nick made the recommendation to use it if you need maintenance. Agreed that they should be brushed and scrubbed routinely even if I think they don’t need annual oiling. Scrubbing with a wet piece of canvas will do wonders for the outsole and heel.
The quote from the above link:
The last step for Chromexcel is coat of Neatsfoot Oil, so when people ask me how to condition this leather, that's always my first recommendation
-
Here is a video interview with Skip Horween…I guess he doesn’t specifically say they use it to finish CXL. He said they use it for shell cordovan and that they have used it the entire time they have been in business. He also said that is what he uses on his CXL boots.

Thanks for your tips guys !
I ordered the saphir care for CXL .
Don’t think I can get yours here in Germany@Memphisakers
Your boots look awesome Josh !! -
Thanks @Daniel San
I think the only two care products Horween sells is Venetian shoe cream and Saphir… either one of those is probably a safe bet. I went for VSC because it is a part of Horween history and it’s cheap here in the US. -
Cool, didn’t knew that they sell the Saphire care.
So that was the right choice.
Ordered the donkey punchers today extremely excited -
These are my first pair of engineers. Im surprised how comfortable boots are without laces and extra leather pushing on the top of my foot… they are so comfortable! The last must be a good fit for the shape of my foot. @BloodnThunder I know you have the devils causeway engineers (super jealous by the way) but do you also have a cxl pair? Curious if the sizing is the same? I’m gonna find a pair of those causeways sooner or later
@Memphisakers I only have the Devil's Causeway but they are made on the same last so outside of the leather stretch characteristics maybe being slightly different I doubt there is any difference in fit.

Attention you bloody donkeys , a new puncher is on the blog
@EastWest
Ok gentlemen, I was expecting something but not what I got today 🧨
The engineers are great boots, but those donkeys are unbelievable ! The craftsmanship is out of this world !!!
Special thanks again to Jamie from Eastwest apparel, the fit is 100% perfect as you suggested . -
Congrats Daniel San Enjoy !

@theorocks
Thank you !
Maybe I build a shrine just to adore them -
Oh man @Daniel San good score! I've had my eye on those for quite a while, might eventually pick up a pair. I love that they have the same heel as the engineers, looks so killer. I'd probably go for that same color, or the roughout.
Strut your stuff, dude! Lookin' fly
-
@popvulture
The roughout looking killer too ! In fact they all look unbelievable!
Shame that they are not made in olive like the combat boots. -
I tried a pair of Lofgren engineers today and they slipped right on easy but then the toe box was tight and the boot was loose around the top of the foot. Sounds like that's not a way for engineers to fit? Never had this kind of boot before. Any recommendations for other kinds? Waiting for a Wesco shipment at IHUK to try them, but tried some of the lace ups and wasn't sure that last suited either.
-
Next pair Donkeys, I absolutely love them. Now I just need the rough out to complete the collection
Again special thanks to Jamie from EastWest Apparel for the outstanding service !!
@EastWest -
@Nkwkfld as another option, you could go custom with Wesco. It’s an one off 100$ and they send you a kit to measure your feet. Downside, you have to be patient. I wait since 11 months for mine (that’s why I placed orders for two further pairs and distributed the orders evenly ).
Others do offer custom as well but waiting time will be similar or worse (Role Club).
Anyways, it’s worth the wait, it’s worth the money, Engineers/ Slip on/ Roper are great. -
Thanks @Dmart that's a good idea. I'm hoping to try the Wesco engineers that are heading to IHUK but if they don't work out going custom might be the way to go.
-
@Chris at Wesco should be here at the anny party. He could take your measurements, can't think of anyone better to do that….
-
Great @Giles that sounds like a plan!
