IH-526V-XHS - 25oz Selvedge Denim Type III Vest - Indigo
-
I should rephrase…. I want one badly. It’s not in the budget right now. I’ve got a 189 with brass buttons somewhere in the UPS system.
-
God willing it’ll be in the budget

@Filthy:
when this come out I will be glad I have both.
exactly what I was thinking…

I was thinking maybe on the next run of 25 oz XHS vests a bottom button would be a good idea instead of a snap. Mine comes unsnapped pretty easily because I am a fat ass. There's a good 4 inches of room in the waist. But because of the length it comes unsnapped when I sit because of the deflection off my waist… if that makes sense.
Also those 2 toggles or whatever you call em come unsnapped from my backpack pretty easily too. It might be good if those where buttons as well.
I posted this here so others that own the vest can share their thoughts. Rather than posting in the Where do you think we can improve thread.

@Filthy same deal with my IHV-21. It becomes less of an issue as the fabric softens and becomes more pliable.
The bottom button thing is the reason why there’s this sartorial rule about leaving the bottom button on vests undone. On less robust buttoned vests, having it done up means the vest bunches up and looks weird when you sit.
I’ve decided the cinch tabs actually look pretty badass flying free, although it should be said that it also became less of an issue when I stopped giving a fekk. [emoji38]

Yeah it's gonna be a long time until the denim softens up. I mean, the hand is as soft as it gets. But it is soooo stiff. I've even been rolling it up like a newspaper. I roll one way and the the other. I soaked the collar and ironed it flat, left it dry, rewet ir again, then folded it down lower than where they ironed it at the factory I now have an inch of fold over vs.the .5 I had when it was new. This thing is so f'n stiff.
-
I can believe it. I’ve had the 21 for three years and it’s only softened the last six months. It’s only the 18oz denim but it has a layer of felt glued to it. But the button popping happens less now.
I guess it’s a necessary design compromise when making complicated garments from extreme materials. Do you want snaps that pop open or buttons that you can’t do up?

I hope I don't sound like I am complaining or somehow ungrateful for the vest. Make no mistake. I absolutely love it. I love the challenge too. Yeah neph your vest is so sick. I would have bought that one if I knew I liked vests (at the time). Like I did not know I loved blue jeans until I got my first pair of Iron Heart. This is my first vest ever.
Edit: it's funny how many times my phone autocorrected vest to best there…

Not at all mate. It’s a good point and this forum is all about this kind of discussion. I think it’s important that @Alex and @Giles know these things too so that together with Haraki-san they can make the best stuff better in the future.
It’s worth repeating that if you’re going to make a type III vest, with all those seams making it even thicker and stiffer, out of something insane like 25oz denim, then there are going to be design/engineering challenges like this one.
