Thanks folks…hmm, maybe a self congratulatory IH purchase is on the cards...
-
- Pay off my wife's car and my own
- Secure funding for the garage apartment project (obtained the building permit on NYE!) and begin construction before Q4
- Drink at a more moderate rate/less often
- Drop a minimum of 20 lbs
- Reduce wardrobe by half
- Explore new employment opportunities
- Set more firm limits in regards to live/work balance
- Get in the habit of cooking more often
-
- Reduce wardrobe by half
I started that in the Fall of 2018 when I tidied up my wardobe and found some Clothes I had forgotten, not something years old but stuff i bought 4 Months before and just lost in the Piles of Clothing. I then basicly stopped buying Clothes and I am going to start again if I really need something or if Iron Heart releases seomthing i really want

Congratulations! Everything else is easy by comparison, right?
-
Should be! I've been told that new construction is significantly easier than remodeling an existing space so we'll find out if that holds true. In the end, the permit took 10 months and required multiple rounds with the city dealing with a non-standard corner lot with an existing, non-conforming structure. I now know more about City of Austin building codes than I would've ever imagined ::)

My list:
-
Get the girlfriend into work, and then move to wherever she is. I'm currently working in Brisbane and she's in Melbourne, so we're about 1500 miles / 2500 km apart. And I'm renting two places.
-
Move out of IT contracting. It's not really going anywhere professionally.
-
I'm tracking OK with fitness. I'd like to lose about 5 kg / 10 lbs, and ideally add a similar amount of muscle. So continue with what I'm doing.
-
Buy a watch. I'm not sure what I'll get yet, and will probably make a decision after SIHH and Baselworld.
-
Replace my computer.
-
Ride my motorbike more. It's currently in Melbourne, and I'm not.
-
In terms of clothing, I really want a leather jacket. I'm lost in the queue with Good Wear, but should be able to get one fairly soon. Otherwise I like the Ship John x Langlitz piece.

@Graeme I'm sorry to hear that. The gig economy is so destabilising to the economy and makes any financial planning and commitment (mortgages) nigh on impossible. I hope you find something that suits you soon.
I've just found out that the job I've been offered would likely require me to work weekends on a Rota. The whole point of changing jobs was to get better work life balance, not make it worse. This was never mentioned in the job description or interview. Really not sure what to do.
-
@Stuart.T thanks.
I've chosen to work as a freelancer because the rates tend to be better. In this case I'd been told that paperwork was requested for an extension, but it fell through as there isn't enough work to keep us busy.
It's not the end of the world. My girlfriend is black, and stayed in Melbourne because she'd had had experiences with racism here on a previous visit. Plus I didn't always get on with the place. (For the coders here, I had a prolonged argument about the necessity of fixing a null pointer exception.)
The downsides are that I need to do the job hunt thing again, and I had a good lifting coach up here.
As for mortgages, in Melbourne where a two bedroom inner city house in need of renovation can easily cost over a million dollars. Buying is off the agenda until the property bubble deflates. It's in the process of doing that at the moment.
I'm sorry to hear about the weekend work rota. Not sure what to suggest there.
-
Redo my back small deck, which will include a bar, covered with a fan.
Travel more.
Wear more denim. -

New job… In February 2017 a new manager joined the team I was a senior social worker in. They came with a bad reputation. I was in a very specialist role, had contributed to the development of new legislation (it has just received Government ascent). Long story short, and after a long period of bullying I decided to move to another team.
I'd been asking a senior manager colleague at the local authority close to where we live, who I've known for years, to let me know if anything comes up there. My specialist role had a long term employee in post, and I'd given up on getting that same post.
A job came up in the new local authority, I applied, and got the job (senior practice leader). I started 3 weeks ago. After 2 weeks in post, I was informed that the person in my dream job was retiring, and it was going to be advertised internally. Long story short, I applied, was interviewed, and got the job!. I took a chance, and somehow it has paid off. I'm super happy about it! I'll now get a chance ti impliment the legislation I contributed to where I work.
