Scuba anyone?

I had a computer fail when I was on the Red Sea live aboard. It's one of those computers that centralizes both the diving and air tank info, so I didn't have any air info. I obviously aborted the dive (without problems) but then had to rely on the crew to loan me a pressure gauge and fit it on the first stage of my regulator. Without this I would have had to skip the remaining dives… ??? My regulator now sports an old fashion gauge. There's something to be said for redundancy...

In information security, this concept is called "defense in depth," where you have layers of defenses against shit that can go wrong so that it takes an unlikely combination of failures for a risk to be realized. I think it is certainly worth keeping that principle in mind for life and death pursuits like scuba diving, climbing, skydiving, etc.
I would like to try scuba diving in Maui this month but I suspect I won't be able to since I'll be up to my eyeballs in taking care of the little. One day…

Thanks folks–I would need to get certified. Sending a note @JDelage

My Scuba plans were put on hold last year due to adverse weather conditions, but I decided to book some intro dives on my trip to Egypt prior to (hopefully) doing my Open Water Certification in Thailand next Jan.
Absolutely loved it, being hissed at by Moray Eels popping in and out of their little caves was a highlight.

@Giles I wasn't specifically told to stay away from them, but my instinct told me I should keep some distance. Thanks for for vindicating my cautiousness..
Also saw some Lionfish and Stonefish. My friend saw an Octopus a little deeper but I had to stay with an instructor close to reef at about 10 meters.
It's definitely confirmed that Open Water is something I'd like to pursue, hope to do that along with a handful of extra dives over a week on Koh Lanta island.

You def should. It is such a multi-dimensionally different thing to normal everyday life....

@pechelman so many great warm waters around the world but the Red Sea has so much animal action.
@T4920 Going OWD in Thailand is cool idea, but You will forever remember the first time in Red Sea.
