XHS is so dope
-
@long_john86 thank you! I did a pre-soak and now I am going full speed ahead for the break in process…
-
Hey all. Hoping for a fit check here with these 634-XHS. I am new to 25oz. Here they are on straight out of the box - no pre-soak or wash.
To me my initial reaction was they felt ‘roomy’. Weirdly the dimensions seem to stack up against my SBGs, which I have also included some pictures on below purely for reference purposes. I am a consistent Tag36 and with the dimensions looking good this seemed a logical choice.
As I am new to 25oz I am unsure whether some of this look is down to the stiffness of the denim. I am also unsure whether the ‘roominess’ that I am sensing will disappear once pre-soaked? There is plenty of room in the waist; although I have read that you can lose an inch of the waist from the pre-soak? All thoughts welcome.
SBG 634 reference photos (also 36 and very similar dimensions)

@long_john86 a hot soak could help tighten everything up, that is what I would do. The waist might end up stretching back out but you could help deter that by using a belt. My pair of 634XHS fit just like you described yours to and they way they look. I do not mind a little extra room though, so if that is a bother to you, you could try to size down. Probably do not need to though.
-
@long_john86 i would say size down one if you have room in your waist. The soak will shrink the denim but it will stretch out. If you are not happy with it and you already got the feeling these are to romy return em to a size 35... Just my thoughts Mate

My rule of thumb is if you can slide your hand easily into your waistband they are borderline too loose. If you can fit a fist into the waistband they are definitely too loose.
Other ways that have worked for me is if the Jean fits just slightly tight and you don’t need a belt to keep them in place, then you have a winner. If you need a belt to hold a new pair of jeans up (pre soak), then they are too big.
Hopefully this makes sense.

these might work with a hot soak and lots of agitation but it's hard to really tell how they're fitting from pictures with how stiff they are new. they don't look that far off to me with maybe the only concern area in the rear with it puckering out a little. That will settle for sure, but sometimes it can be a sign you're better off considering a size down. If you can afford to do so, order a pair of the 35s and return the one that doesnt work.
fwiw, in my sample size of 2 (ymmv), i've found XHS to shrink a little less than XHSib. Also, what shrinks won't magically stretch unless you put continued stress and tension on that part of the garment.

Thanks all for your feedback.
Man this is a tough one. Unfortunately I can’t seem to find a size down in stock anywhere to compare otherwise I would have done so. This would have been a significant help.
@goosehd I can definitely slide a hand down the waist, but not a fist.
The question of whether to ‘soak and see’ or bail on this one, is the only thing on my mind now….
Ultimately I have no experience of 25oz in comparison to 21oz so don’t know how significant or not the soak will be.
Perhaps this is one for me to sleep on…

The difference between 21oz and 25oz is that 25oz is
only one-washedSanforized, but unwashed - so there is still some shrinkage to be expected. You cannot do this with 21oz as all of the shrink is gone already before they are on the market. -
@Oaktavia I was under impression that 25 oz was sanforized, but unwashed.

Yes, that is what I meant to say. From the website product page:
"Sanforized, but unwashed - expect approximately one inch shrinkage in the waist and inseam".
-
@Oaktavia yeah I think the 1 inch potential shrinkinge is the thing making me wonder if a soak may do the trick here. It mentions waist and inseam but surely there will be some shrinkage across the board in proportion/relation to this?
@sabergirl thank you for your perspective on this - I also am a fan of more comfortable fits. My SBG pictured above fit like a glove and the measurements between the two are very similar - perhaps up to 1cm out on a few dimensions (larger in the XHS), which has made me even more confused with the fit as aesthetically I don’t feel like I am seeing what the dimensions are saying…. 🫠
-
Difficult thing about shrinkage that it also cones down to temperature and how long you soak and also every denim handles it a little bit different like the guys from IHUK once told me it’s no exact math. But with my last experience on a XHSib i had half a inch to a inch shrinkage in the waist but in length around 2 inch. I dipped it in hot water for like 30/40 minutes and agitated the hell out of it. But sometimes this gives me only half a inch of shrinkage in length.

@long_john86 “which has made me even more confused with the fit as aesthetically I don’t feel like I am seeing what the dimensions are saying…. “
I know how you feel with this mate.. I wear 555’s and usually end up buying a tag 34 with waist measurement around 34.5 inch. After a couple of weeks wear they usually stretch to around 35.5 when worn in and feel perfect. I read that ducks aren’t the easiest to stretch so ordered the new 555 ducks in a tag 34 with a stated waist measurement of 35.6 inch. Thought they’d be comfortable straight out of the gate. Wrong can barely get them over my thighs and the waist is tight as hell! Can only just fasten them. Hemmed them too so can’t return them. Think this is going to be a painful couple of weeks
-
@DeeDee85 ahh mate hella yeah I feel your pain big time!!
-
Out of curiosity @long_john86 did you measure your pair of sbg to compare against your pair of XHS? The size charts from IHUK are great, but they represent an aggregate of a few pairs from the latest batch. Actual measurements vary from pair to pair because they’re hand-constructed.
Maybe one of your jeans is an an outlier from the chart?
-
Late to the party here @long_john86 , but those look a little too big to me. To my eyes, the thing I’ve noticed in 634s that indicate this are bunching in the crotch and seat areas, both of which your pair seems to be doing. Since you can’t find a size down, I do think a really hot soak would get you some good shrink, but I’m not sure it’d go all the way you want. In my pairs of XHS, I’ve usually only gotten about a half inch in the tub using the faucet at full hot and agitating throughout. The experiences seem to differ though — some people get more.
Something else I notice is that the waist looks a bit loose. Usually I want these to fit not too snug at the get go, but snug enough to stay up. If someone could easily pants you pre-soak, then that’s probably too loose (hopefully that’s a helpful anecdote haha).

IH Germany has a Tag 35 in stock if you still consider a size down.
-
@sabergirl thanks, yes there are some minor discrepancies but they don’t seem to correlate with what I am seeing
@popvulture thank you for your input!
Ok, slept on this and I think these Tag 36 are going back. If I am lucky I will snag the 35 from IH Germany - thanks @Twistlock for the suggestion!
This is why I love this place.
In a nutshell: awesome people giving awesome advice. Have a great weekend all thank you for helping me out with this decision process ️
