@Giles wondering if you (or any other forum members) have ever fished for peacock bass in South America? My father-in-law goes once a year to Brazil and it’s his favorite trip. I’ll have to get some pics from him but the fish are huge, they fight like hell, and look truly intimidating

I have not fished for them, but they are on my got-to-do. At some point, the fishing I currently do in the tropics will get too much for me. I fish with mainly 30 year olds, and they literally have to carry me sometimes. So, I am planning what I do when I cant do that any longer, South American rivers and lakes figures high on that list....

@Giles I kind of thought it sounded like something you would enjoy. I’ll try to get some pics from him next time we visit and I’ll throw some up here. He loves the adventure aspect of boating into the remote waters too. He also goes to Alaska to fish for Salmon once a year but I don’t think it’s remotely the same type of fishing

I believe you are talking about fish locally known as tucunare. I’m not much of a fisherman but I frequently hear about it through friends. My understanding is that they typically range from 2 - 3 kg. In Bolivia, they are mostly found in lagoons in the Beni region. I believe lures are mostly used with them.
I’ll ask around for specifics (trip operators, prices, best season, prized spots,…) and feed back if I find anything useful.
PS: I can vouch for their delicious flavor!!! -

Hey! I'm visiting Tokyo for the first time. Can you (or anyone else) recommend a tacle shop...
Tokyo really is something else. There is a tackleshop larger than decent sized supermarket back home and it's open 24/7.

Grew up fishing lakes all the time. About 10 lakes within 30 miles of where I grew up in the Sierra Nevada (love bass fishing and eating). Haven't fished much in the last 10 years living on the coast without any lakes nearby and never getting good at ocean fishing from the shore. Also never really learned fishing on the rivers. But here is one of my last catches from 9 years ago. Biggest fish I ever caught--22in lingcod from the bay. Caught it on a 6lb test and put up one hell of a fight.
