@endo I read that one out loud to @Madame-Buttonfly

@Tago-Mago …but he gets points for it’s legibility

@Oliver_YO181 I think that sums up the esoteric approach that most medical students and MDs have to lab work and science, at least in my experience

@endo @Tago-Mago so much love and respect…I just want to give you two a hug

Be all that as it may, there’s a rich body of peer reviewed evidence that observation of social media likes creates a dopamine spike, and in turn that has been tied to self esteem and anxiety issues.
I am self assured and all that, but I’m not so arrogant as to think I’m immune from this dopamine spike, thus I avoid looking at Likes.
This all feels like it's about Facebook, or similar platforms. The IH forum and its upvote system are not Facebook, and the comparison feels like apples and oranges. I'm not saying that there isn't some level of validation addiction being fed with the upvotes, nor do I disagree with you that it drives engagement, but those are all big concepts that have much larger implications that don't seem to fit with this platform. It seems correlative at best, and while I respect your opinion, it feels like it's more directed at platforms whose algorithms are designed for clicks and ad sales, and whose engagement creates more opportunities for eyeballs on ads. This forum isn't any of that.
Regardless of all of our differing opinions, this is a really interesting conversation!

It’s wishful thinking IMO to think that this forum or our brains are somehow immune from this psychological phenomenon, and the noble intention of recognizing someone and giving them some love may have unintended consequences… but I’ve said enough and will leave it there.

@mclaincausey Fair enough

@mclaincausey 95% of what our minds do isn’t something we, ourselves don’t notice at all. But that doesn’t necessarily say it’s all a bad thing. I still believe in the good will of people. Those are seeking for high votes/likes/thumbs up have deeper troubles then give a f*ck about upvotes and that’s the core of there issue. So it’s more the why that mathers then the what. It all start somewhere and that’s where the talk or discussion needs to take place. Not pointing our fingers because what people do but start a talk about why they are doing it. If they’re not open for that kinda talks then we need to let it go because it’s still ‘assuming’ why we are thinking why they have that kinda behavior and that’s a more serious flaw in human species then the thing your pointing out. We need to talk, so in other words communicate with each other. This is also the core of the forum. We communicate, we share, we care so there’s a lot of love around here. In the end it we can have our own opinions in things and that’s fine and in my imo we could still get along. Life is like a marriage you can’t always get what you want.

Being a mod, means that I have to make decisions based upon my gut instincts and on occasion I may do things out of haste that I regret later. For example, I closed this discussion because I was worried where it could go, not where it was currently and I apologize for that.
It was a healthy, thoughtful, and fun exchange that deserves a second chance.
I appreciate what you guys bring to the table and look forward to the continuation of this discussion.

You know, this could be viewed as a twisted scheme to receive more upvotes...
