They're a really atypical brand.

great read Graeme, thank you for posting.
my simple blacked out 5:
not bad for a very inexpensive everyday "beater" i love how the cal window is all blacked out & the brushed muted case. it's the little things

Portuguese is one of my all time favorites.

That's awesome G. Love the IWCs.

@mvb:
there is a 'hommage' of the portuguese which has a nice seagull movement from parnis, costs less then 100 bucks
That's outstanding.

I'm anti-IWC in general (they charge too much for their class of watches vs. competitors imo) but the Portuguese is beautiful. I'd break my rule for one of those.
of course any high-end watch brand charge a lot compared to their actual cost giving the fact that a lot manufacturers (even patek in some of their chronographs) use some Valjoux/ETA parts as Base in some/most of their movements. engineering quality and built of the cases in IWC's are extremely good any way. IWC changed marketing strategy (which reflect part of the prices imo) when CEO Kern took over and concentrated on the Asian market including campaign with sports and other celebrities from all over the world (Figo, Zidane, Becker etc), including Integration into richemont group, fair enough imo. They have a lot of success with their themes and boutique strategy like other brands hublot, panerai, rolex, brequet, omega etc as well.
but I understand your reasoning. I owned some IWC's sold traded all but may go back one day
