Significance of the selvage thread color?

Quick question. Other than being unique, is there any significance to the color of the selvage thread line? My Levi's and IH are red. My Full Counts are pink. My ROY's are straight up white. Please merge this thread if its redundant. I couldnt find another thread, but then again, digging through all the "selvage" results is too burdensome.

My understanding is that the color of the selvage line was (originally) an arbitrary assignment by the mill, so that they could know at a glance which roll of denim was going to what customer. Now, to a certain extent, it's tradition, (i.e., Levis is always red) imitation, (Levis is red, so red must be the "right" color) or simply manufacturer preference (Momotaro's signature pink, Samurai's silver or gold for special editions, etc.).
That could be wrong, however, so maybe someone with greater knowledge will chime in.
