Looks like my Cordovan is coming apart on the edges.
It’s been my my constant back pocket companion for just under two years.
Hell, its got 21 ounces of warp permanently embossed into the leather!Any idea on how to stop this tearing from spreading?
When considering purchasing such a wallet, this scares me. How did this end with any warranty and I am especially curious how this is possible. Can a layer of full Cordovan be scraped off as if it were a film layer?
-
@Alex That is reassuring, but do you know how this is possible? There is normally no film layer over Shinki Hikaku Cordovan, is there?

I finally made it happen! I’m just after ordering this wallet in the natural leather. I had to convince my wife to make it a Christmas and birthday present. Sort of a drag I just missed buying at the lower price by a week but it’s really a small price to pay for something that should last me forever (at least that’s what I tell myself).
-
Do you guys put any sort of protectant/leather treatment on these wallets or just leave them alone?

I have used this on mine, that was recommended by @Daniel-San
-
Thanks @Oaktavia i may put something on when I get it. I’m sure oils from my hands will help a little too.
-
I would be extremely cautious about that. Cordovan is packed full of juice already and rarely needs more. When it does, you want to be minimalist about it.

I used it on an older, used black one of these I bought secondhand. It was dry and thirsty, but I have not used any product on my new natural leather one. It does not need any help at all, at least for now.
-
Yeah. Cordovan is stuffed with oil and it’s not a high maintenance product. It will not absorb some conditioners at all. If you overstuff it it’s one of the few ways you can actually damage the stuff. I’m not prepared to give any advice other than be careful and make sure you only condition as needed and with the right substances.
-
@mclaincausey good call, I generally do not use anything on any leather unless it physically looks dry and thirsty.
-
I think that’s a good rule of thumb for all leathers.
I wasn’t correct about how frequently to condition according to Horween (https://www.horween.com/blog/2018/4/6/shell-cordovan-care ), though to be fair a wallet gets way less abuse than shoes so probably don’t need to condition every 10-15 times you use your wallet. I haven’t conditioned mine ever and have had it over 10 years.
-
Good info thanks. I got the natural one and it’s arriving today. I’ll probably just leave it alone for the time being.
-
Best Christmas ever! Wife just gave me the wallet. Is it supposed to come with a coin? This was in the zipper pocket
-
@deanclean It is considered bad luck to “gift” someone an empty wallet, I’m not sure if this is just an English custom or it’s something that happens everywhere. Iron Heart will stick a Japanese coin in before posting for good luck and just goes to show how good the customer service is from these guys
