The 2014 FIFA World Cup

Man that was close. In reality Belgium was the better team. I thought they should have out it away a few times during the first 90. In reality we had one solid chance on the same timeframe. I was unexpectedly surprised by how well the US did during the WC this year. It was great that nearly half of my office was in the break room to watch the entire match. Great job Belguim and I'll support you if you can get part Argentina.

Assuming US interest in football can rise steadily (which to me depends upon the growth of MLS), I think we're at least a generation from challenging to win a Cup. My fear is that we will now tune out for four years as a nation as has been the pattern. In some cases, even going into defense mode ("soccer's for pussies anyway").
But I love the progress and the young guys on the team and wouldn't be shocked by a 1/4 finals appearance in four years. I really enjoyed how the team turned from a conservative and timid "possession" team incapable of possessing into a fearless, recklessly attacking team.

Here's a quick cellphone pic I took at today's Argentina v Switzerland game. Gutted for the Swiss really.
Props to the US team for their performance at this World Cup. If England showed even 50% of the heart and drive that the US team showed, we wouldn't inflict this slight variant of the same misery on our fans at every tournament.

i can only imagine the atmosphere at one of those games.

The quirks of football that baffle Americans
-
The US is hosting an extended centenary Copa America in 2016 I believe so that should be a short-term target for them and help retain the focus and momentum for the next edition of the "greatest show on earth" in 4 years time.

Wow Babyknight, jealous! How is the Arena Corinthians? The late header against the post from the Swiss was so unlucky and the way this WC has been going you wouldn't have been surprised if they'd have equalised.
Most of the 'big' teams showing that (annoying/admirable) habit of getting the result even when they've not played very well.

Hand it to the yanks for never quitting ….surely the increase in viewing will get some
corporations , bigwigs attention for money making in the name of football (soccer) in the U.S.
Perhaps Beckham will come back to promote again.Giles your link reminded me of Rivaldo's horrible fake in 2002 ....pathetic .

Well said Seul and congrats to you and the flying flock of pigs ! Harr harr

Hopefully the U.S. teams efforts will have long reaching
positive results in America.Colombia I reckon can knock out Brasil . Will be a great match.

Remarkable that with all these ultra-close games, all eight group champions from the first stage prevailed. Don't think that ever happened before, the quarter-finals thus filled.
Few things would surprise me now, I think every single remaining game is 50/50 or very nearby. -
It's shocking. I don't think there's any other sport that can have scoring parity like this amidst so much lopsided skill.
