I've had a similar instance occur, except UPS delivered my parcel to a different/wrong/ incorrect address & because I choose to waive the signature they wanted to hold me liable for the delivery to the incorrect address.
I explained to UPS I can not be liable for an item delivered to a wrong address and made UPS provide the GPS used to show where the item was delivered. I was then told by UPS I can not file a claim since I wasn't the shipper so I contacted the shipper & was told they do not insure & since I waived signature I was again out of luck.
I thought that was again a trash response so I filed a claim with my bank & advised of what happened outlining that the error was made by UPS delivering my item to an incorrect address. As a customer if I make a purchase & the shipper doesn't insure the item I shouldn't & will not accept responsibility if there is a problem with the shipment being delivered to an incorrect address.
Guess we are going to have to agree to disagree on this, although your line of events don't exactly match with mine.
In addition it would be great if customers could add insurance to their purchases to protect themselves in the event of a mishap with the shipping agent if they want to waive signature.

It seems reasonable that if you waive the "signature" you are doing so at your own risk. In my opinion liability on the part of the shipper ends when the package is taken by UPS and liability ends for UPS when they deliver to the correct address…..My preference is to have the package held at a UPS access point to be picked up at my convenience. This ensures it's safety and also allows me to pick up on my schedule.

Agreed with @Dstauffer, the retailers responsibility/liability ends when they have dropped off the package with a correct address on the label. UPS screwing up the delivery location in Monday's circumstance is totally different and is their fault.
It's ridiculous that someone would file a 'fraud' claim because they changed shipping instructions and ended up having their package stolen.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON UK SHIPPING
Please note you now have a choice of shipping within the UK:
DEFAULT will be UPS
ALTERNATE will be DPD Local
Both are next working day (for most of UK), signed-for delivery. We've made UPS the default because it's a little less expensive (for us). But if you prefer DPD Local then please tick that option, and we'll happily use them instead (and we particularly like our local DPD agent, Paddy - so we want to make sure he still gets plenty of business!)

On average deliveries are pretty fast. Both UPS and DHL in 2 days. Sometimes even within 24 hours.
Not this time though. IH sent Wednesday, delivery scheduled by UPS for Friday. Friday they reschedule to Monday. Monday they reschedule to Tuesday… Lets see what happens tomorrow ::)

I have to say, I have used FedEx for years through work with minimal problems. My new praise is that I placed an order Sunday evening, got the usual thank you, and your order has shipped on Monday. Unfortunately I wasn't home but FedEx attempted a 1030AM delivery Tuesday AM. The is record shipping. I love it….

We started to use FedEx as they guarantee next working day anywhere in the States. We can manually take signature requirements off, so I am sure they would then leave it at your door - obviously this is down to you in trusting your neighbours…!
how's this with rest of the world (Perth/ Australia)? i stuck with UPS as they've been proven good but i recently saw the new fedex with my current orders and wonder how they might perform..

i hope i get the chance to. was gonna do it for the green UHF but decided not to.
the next item on my list is the ombre and i'll probably leave that in the uk to pick it up when i'm there..
