Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant how thick is the layer of insulation? I was discussing roof construction in the USA vs. Norway with @steelworker a while back. Insulation to stop heat loss will help with the icing but the best solution is to have an effective "cold air" layer between the top (outward) layer of roofing and an under-roof. The building regs in Norway specify a 2" minimum. You can clearly see which houses have it and which don't around my way… Ed seemed to think that was unusual in the States.

Oh, gotcha. If memory serves we have maybe a foot-and-a-half or so of blown-in insulation up in the attic. Something like that. But I'm guessing there are some spots which are decidedly lacking… hence the heat problem up on the roof. I'll need to get up there in the spring and try and figure it out. We've only been in this house a little over two years now, so we're still figuring out the issues as they come along!
We've also just had seemingly the perfect conditions for ice dam formation this year. Lots of snow and some extreme temperature fluctuations. Didn't have any major issues the two winters before this.

Spring break means getting on to all those half finished home improvement jobs… entrance hall needed the finishing touches (architraves, skirting boards etc...)
Current working duds are my trusty IHSH-68-ind and my IH-666L-19-v2. The lht is great. It gets really soft with some wear and the surface of the fabric deteriorates with abrasion giving a crosshatch wear pattern and a 3D slubbiness that isn’t apparent when the jeans are new.
If you look closely you can see Hot Ingrid putting her head in the oven. I should probably go and speak to her about that...
