IH-888S-21 - 21oz Selvedge Denim Medium/High Rise Tapered Cut Jeans - Indigo
-
@Oaktavia hey Stevie
I’m about a month into a pair off 888-XHS. I’ve been following your XHSib/UHR project, very cool
-
@Giles Hi Giles - hope retirement is treating you well and you’re spending plenty of time at sea. The new grand Seiko looks great, my Dad has a similar watch

Everyone mentions about getting true size on 888 cut.
I am size 34 on 555 cut which is 35.3" on the waist whereas 888 is 33.6" on the waist in size 34. This difference confused me to be honest.
Has anyone experienced the same size on 555 and 888?
Thanks. -
@hepyek Interested in the answers you get as I was going to be going -1 size to account for the 1" stretch in the waist
-
@hepyek the most important thing to look at when choosing are the measurements, not the tag size. My tag sizes for example:
666-21 - 36
666-18 - 35
777-XHS - 36
555-14 - 36, 35 would have fit in the waist but not the other dimensions
888D - 36If the other dimensions don’t work when you size up then you may have to check another cut. Personally, I find the compare function super helpful to initially check dimensions across different cuts and denim weights.
-
I’d add that it depends on your body shape heavily. I’m a pretty slim dude, and go down from a 34 in 555 and 777 to a 32 in 888, waist goes from the loosest measurement to the tightest with the 888.
555 is skin tight on me with a baggy waist, but I’ve seen thicker guys rock it perfectly.
Measurement comparison is key, follow the website instructions and you’ll be golden. You can count on an inch of stretch or possibly more if you need it. -
@m4xime I do always size for the stretch. My target waist is 34” true, and I always size 888 down to account for it. Different fabrics have different stretch posted.

Thanks very much guys. -
Merry Christmas y’all!
Just got a fresh pair of 888s 21oz. I’m under the impression these were washed before they were released to retailers. Purchased from BlackBlue; they had a hard-to-find 33.
But the leather tag is perfect and does not seem to have been washed/wet at any point.
Is the tag stitched on after the factory wash?
I’ve been around this brand for a long time and I’m surprised I don’t know the answer. Ha!
Please educate me! -
I am pretty sure the tag gets sewn after the wash. I actually think that the fabric gets washed before the pants are even sewn but I am not sure about that. It just makes sense.
-
@yannis Thank you for your reply.
I usually remove the patch for no other reason than to not have to care for it whilst sewn to my pants.
If you are correct, and the fabric is washed before sewn, then I would be best served to soak before wearing, so as to set the constructional stitching, with an eye on longevity and avoiding blow outs.
Normally I cold soak my brand new “one washed” 21oz because they benefit from rinsing remnant starch and finishing agents. Maybe that’s in my head, but I’ve never worn an IH jean right out of the box without a soak.
However…
These feel amazing and I won’t soak if someone can confirm they were washed AFTER construction.
-
@Autorotate, they wash the jeans after construction so the stitching is ready to go, the fabric is also sanforized so all the shrinkage is out. 21oz is good to go out of the bag! I just recently washed my 21oz 555s and they didn’t shrink at all. Enjoy it’s a great denim!
-
Yeah it’s useless to soak any IH item other than XHS or UHR. Tag on the inside chest of most IH shirts states “wear as long as possible without washing”. I doubt the sanforized jeans are any different.
-
@Autorotate thank you for the heads up re: BlackBlue. Have been looking for a 33 for what seems like months.

@shadow-denim
Yeah buddy. Hope they still have a pair for you. Grayson was very helpful. He took measurements for me before he chucked them in the mail. BlackBlue will get future business from me! IH UK/USA is always numero uno, but in lieu of out of stock inventory, BlackBlue came to the rescue.
