IH-634-XHS - 25oz Selvedge Denim Straight Cut Jeans - Indigo

@Joe_M like any well made garment, if it were easy to button up at first then it would not hold up over time. Just practice buttoning them up while you're not wearing them if it is that tough for you.
You should try and do the buttons up on a Fine Creek FQHH…. I had to button the buttons while I wasn't wearing it probably 75 times or so. It took me 30+ minutes just to do the buttons up the first time. Now they practically pop on and off themselves.
Also back in like 2014 or so, they had issues with the button holes coming apart on XHS. So how IH has adapted over the years to overcome this weak point is pretty awesome. The button holes hold up way better now. I'd say like after a week wear they will be super easy. It usually takes me laying in bed and about twenty minutes to get the top two buttons done up on a new pair of XHS since I always size down.

I haven't tried Fine Creek but I have actually worn 25oz extreme weight of denim from other manufacturers and some are designed to more easily button and some are not. Some require breaking in to button and some are designed able to be button from the start. Iron Hearts are particularly stubborn and require some breaking in, that's their nature and that's fine. I'll try to find some way of managing and to be worthy of them. And if I can't, well there're plenty of lighter denims that require less perseverance and discomfort for us softer types as Lewis kindly noted.

I personally enjoy how brutally masochistic XHS is. I hope maybe I didn't come off too snarky. I didn't mean to. Sorry bud.
That being said, after like two months the XHS get crazy comfy and soft. The juice is definitely worth the squeeze.
-
The button thing only lasts a few days to a week depending on wear and don’t give up because it does get easier.
My tip is to only do a few buttons at a time (saves the wear on the thumbs and fingers), and don’t undo the unnecessary buttons if you can.
Two weeks from now you will forget all about it (that is until you get another pair).
-
I'm not copping out here, but most people enjoy the fact that they are bastards to do up the first few times, it's part of the 25oz journey…..
Like how I had to take a picture of the jeans standing on their own after the initial soak
-
To echo what all these folks have said about XHS, the stubborn buttons are part of the gnarly journey of discomfort to gain what will likely be your favorite pair of jeans you've ever had. It just takes time. Make sure you don't have to use the bathroom too badly before going while wearing them…I came close to disaster with my latest pair of XHSbb the first day.
-
reminds me of the time when I had to pee and I realized I had put my boxers on backwards
-
@Joe_M On another note,if you happen to be drinking beer during the break in period, don’t wait until the last minute to head for the bathroom. In fact give yourself extra time.
This is what I was alluding to exactly.
. Great minds think alike,as I hadn’t seen your post when I posted 2 minutes later.

This is sort of a general 634 question — I'm wearing my 666 XHS today and I really would not mind a bit more room in the top block.
How much more room is there in the 634?

Not that much. It is a little more roomy due to the thigh being more generous, but still snug over the hips and in the rear.
-
Ahh cool, gotcha. Hm. I find myself wishing more and more that there were a straight 888.

What's your inseam? The 1955´s have wide thigh but the taper will be reduced with a decent hem job. Either way I suspect you'd dig them.

The 1955s seem great but from what I gather, they seem constantly on the verge of extinction… plus no XHS. I'm guessing no UHR either. One can hope? Dunno, I'm just a big fan of higher rise straight legs — they're sorta ideal for me. I've gotten some Mr. Freedoms and McCoys over the past year that really have the perfect fit, but I strongly prefer IH denim.
@henry_david @Palmer y'all mentioned enjoying the room — have you owned any 666? If so, thoughts on the diffs?

I have 666 in a 40, and they still feel trimmer in the top block (except the waist) than my 38 in 634 or 888. An older pair of 666 that I have in 38 isn’t comfortable to put on any more.
666 doesn’t sound like the play for you unless you want to size up. If you’re willing to size up, I’d take another look at 555, also.
At the end of the day, I think neph is right—I’d look for 1955 or stick with 634 for straight cut fit from IH.
