21oz Shinayaka Selvedge Denim

@neph93 Have they changed much measurement wise since you got them?
Depending on measurements I might try the 555 instead of the 888 when this drops
-
@Filthy they are very comfortable indeed. All the soft heaviness of the standard 21oz, but with extra flex. My first pair of IH from Gosport were 555's with starting dims similar to these. I was a little heavier then than I am now, and tbh they were on the small side for a long while and it took weight loss plus stretch for them to get close to being comfy. Given that I'm carrying about 6 pounds over my ideal weight I can still wear these with no issues. No restriction of movement, no biting waistband.
@spitfiredealer I have been a little lax about documenting changes in size, so this is based on how they feel, but I would say they stretch out slowly. You get some of the stretch of regular denim but the elastic means is is retarded. This means they hold their shape really well and the stretch of the elastic itself does the work. I'll measure them pre and post wash next time they need to go in the machine.

That's good to know. Thanks a lot.

Thanks neph. Are the thighs smaller than what you would normally go for on a non stretch pair?
For instance if I need a minimum of 12.5” on normal
21oz what could I get away with in this denim?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The thighs and knee on these are at the absolute lower limit of what I’d buy in regular denim. In fact, seeing as this is the 555 I probably wouldn’t have bought these with the dims. The stretch means what would have been restrictive or uncomfortable becomes absolutely doable.

it's going to be a bit strange trying to figure out sizing on these. When I am usually deciding I know mostly that I can get some stretch if needed. So if things are a bit tight to start it's ok they will stretch out and stay stretched ( until a wash). With these I am worried they will always spring back to their original dimensions and look tight.

I agree with @sabergirl The universe is expanding. I’ve been the same weight for 20 years but now prefer 30 or 31” to my initial 28” projects. The stretch is not the issue here. It’s the flexibility. Same size, more comfort

I followed suit with the Ignition Stretch jeans. Based on the measures of the 36, I could have squeezed into them and the stretch meant it would be wearable - but I went with my recent 38 standards - and while they are not as slim as I could have managed, they are fitted but with Kung Fu abilities [emoji56]

I am so excited about this. I have the 888 in 21s and SBG but my thighs keep growing from training and they are almost too tight on the legs. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Hoping in black also! Thanks guys!

Should work well for you. I can’t really wear 555’s normally, but these give me full range of movement despite being quite snug on my thighs.

Haraki has been developing this new denim for 3 years. Until he had got the amount of flex he was looking for and the look and feel of our signature 21oz indigo selvedge denim, he just kept on trying.
He has developed this denim so that it makes slim and tapered jeans more comfortable when riding of doing manual labour which involves a lot to bending and crouching…
But Haraki is an innovator, that is what makes Iron Heart what it is. Suppress that mad professor like innovation and edge-of-the-envelope surfing genius, and you rip the heart and soul out of the brand. You would not have 25oz, you would not have UHFs, you would not have had paper denim, or ridiculously heavy chambrays, or the best N1s in the world, or 7.5oz t-shirts etc etc etc...
...we have had our largest single order in the history of Iron Heart for these jeans from one retailer, and we have had to double our initial production run of the denim, so it obviously works for someone.
So please be open minded about it, we are not selling out.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m at least semi-open-minded about it. I won’t even rule out the possibility of trying it someday (I don’t really personally see the need for it for myself as I feel the 21oz already has plenty of give, but if the same treatment was given to the 25oz denim it would at least give me pause). These are all good points, it’s just that in my mind denim should be rugged and tough, and stretch denim is anything but IMHO. Granted, maybe that’s because until now there has been no stretch IH 21oz denim. But I’ve just always had a healthy bit of disdain for stretch denim for men’s jeans (totally get it for women’s jeans, if this denim had been developed to lure more women into the IH fold I never would have questioned it).
I definitely applaud H’s innovator spirit. As you indicated, IH wouldn’t be what it is without it. I’ve certainly embraced the lighter-weight denim that I once was somewhat unsure of, so maybe a couple years down the line I’ll wonder why I even questioned it. I’m just a bit of a purist when it comes to denim, at least as far as the construction and the fabric itself is concerned. As long as IH doesn’t sacrifice quality and taste in pursuit of market share I will remain open-minded.
Hell, maybe the stretch in the knees will combat knee-bagging, if so that might warm me up to the idea.
So, uhhh… hahaha... when is this denim getting released in the 777 cut, again? Asking for a friend, not for myself, of course.

@neph93 that 555 cut is perfect on you - thanks for the pics

Fades coming in around on the high contrast areas. The colourshift is starting on the thighs as well, buy it needs good light. I recently picked up a fresh pair is the standard 21oz and was able to do a first hand comparison. There is really very little difference. Lovely stuff.
-
Yeah looks exactly like reg 21oz to me! Killer!

Update time!
This pair just got their second wash after another stint as work jeans. They are at around 100 wear days. Fading is starting for real, and based on earlier experience with regular 21oz, this is where things start accelerating.
The denim still looks and behaves like the flagship denim, although after the second wash, the elastane has given up a little, meaning that they don’t seem to have tightened up after seeing 40C water. They were much more forgiving to put on this time compared to when new and after the first wash. There is still stretch in the material but it doesn't need to work so hard any more. The elastane meant these jeans were always comfy even when tight, but now they are an absolute dream.
