634 looking ridiculous on me… just the wrong shape?
-
I don’t need the belt, here’s a close up of the waist, it’s not obscenely tight but it’s snug.
-
Interesting how the hips seem to billow out some. That may be due to the rear pockets. I would think they should relax as they break in. But I understand your concern. To really break in a pair of jeans you need to love how they look. I love the 888 cut. I bought my first 634 cut in the cords, but they don’t billow like yours in the hips.
-
Thanks yeah that’s exactly it, I’ve worn them literally every day since September and I thought they might reshape themselves a bit but obviously not.
I figured it could be the pockets also, but I’ve seen some pics online of people of similar build or slimmer looking really great. Maybe I need to get on the Kim Kardashian butt workout.
It’s a shame as the fabric has really softened up and feels great.

Maybe post em to sell and start with a new cut? Expensive jeans to not love. Do you have any other IH jeans? Obviously folks are obsessive over them for a reason, but learning which cut works best for your body type could be a bit of trial and error. Slim fellow like yourself may enjoy the 777 or even 555.

Yeah good call…
I’ve got a pair of 666 being hemmed currently, as in the pic they fit absolutely perfect raw. Problem is they’re gonna shrink a bit in the initial soak/wash so whilst they’ll still fit, they won’t have the regular leg I’d ideally like.
Going to try and cold soak and hope the fabric doesn’t suffer later.
Pic below (pre hemming)
Also a couple of pics of other straight legs I have that don’t have the same hip cut - ONI 246 (reg straight) and Nudie Tuff Tony 18oz (wide straight).
If it wasn’t for the weird billowing hips the 634 would be perfect.
-
This is pretty weird… I agree that they look somewhat odd especially when comparing to the other straight fit options you're wearing in the pictures (which all look absolutely great btw!).
Have you taken actual measurements of your pair and compared to the sizing chart?
I really can't imagine it being the case, but maybe you have a one off with a too large top block that has somehow gone unnoticed?
-
My guess is that it’s a combination of skinny legs and lack of drape in the fabric.
If you’re really set on the 634 I would suggest trying the 14oz since they will drape better.
The 634 look crap on me well. When I had them, that’s all IH had. But fortunately there are now many cuts to choose from. If 634 look really bad then 777 should look great. At least they do for me.
-
Thanks yeah I think I’m going to have to admit defeat. The measurements post wash are still pretty much as in the size chart so there’s nothing wrong with them.
The two other brands in the pics have a higher rise, the ONI is 20oz so close in weight, but the taper from the waist is less severe due to the rise. You can see on the Nudies that if the rise was a couple of inches lower like the 634, there would likely be a similar ballooning at the hip.
At least the 666 fit well, so I’ll have a pair of IH UHR I can enjoy.
-
Sounds like you found your way to the 666 already but I found sizing up one in the xhsib make them look a little bit more like the 634 but still with a snugger top block. The knee and hem are nearly as wide as the 634s in 21oz so it presents a similar shape. Maybe worth consideration one day. I've only ever tried on one pair of 634s (21od) but they were well worn and a size down from my usual and they fit pretty good, but I still prefer the 666 overall. Now I wear those 634s for dirty work in the garage or under the car.
-
Thanks, some good tips.
I might hold on to the 634, if we have another lockdown I’ll end up needing a pair with a bit more room if the last lockdown was anything to go by…

Update on this. I think it is the pockets. I washed them again and they fit better but as you can see, if I pull the pockets in they look infinitely better.
I’m sure there’s no problem but if anyone has a 34w and can measure the distance between back pockets.
I guess there’s not much I can do but at least we figured it out.
Also the white marks are from the wash, I wrinkled them pulling them right-side out when wet and it dried white, I’m not too stressed about it as they’re not as visible under normal light.
-
Much better and i'm sure they will relax even more as you beat them up.
-
Oh much, much better. Now go beat the hell out of em.

@1981FXe, maybe a dumb question, but you mention pulling in the pockets in your last post. What exactly did you do?
Is this just a temporary demonstration of what's going on and you really havent "solved the problem" permanently yet?Seems like the pockets and their stiffness should relax over time to drape more like what is shown in the 2nd picture.

I just pinched them together for the pic with my hand.
Having now received a pair of 666 in 33W which fit perfect. I think these 634 are just the wrong size for me. I notice the pockets are about in line with the belt loops on both the 666 and 634 and there’s no ballooning at all on the 666. I should’ve got the 33W. They were out at the time and it was my first pair of IH.
No big deal as the 666 are absolutely brilliant but at least I’ve got a 34W if the beer/exercise ratio drops significantly.
-
Thanks yeah it’s not a bad idea.
I was considering dropping them at Soldier Blue to get them altered but although they’d do a great job it would be pricey. I’m so pleased with the 666 also that I’m gonna leave the 634 as they are.
Didn’t think I’d have a pair of £300 beater jeans but here we are.

The 634 has been the trickiest pair of IH for me to nail, which has been frustrating because I love the leg opening. But all the trickiness has come in the top block — I’ve bought a pair in 33 that I could barely get on, only to swap for a 34 that’d fall right off almost. When I have gotten it nailed though, it’s an amazing fit.
I’m almost dead on your same height and weight, albeit with slightly bigger thighs, and I’m a 33 in the 634UHR. I think you just got a size too big. They don’t fit badly, but I do think a lot of the frustration you had at the beginning would’ve been mostly taken care of with a size down.
Like others have said, they’re definitely wearable but you could always flip em and eventually get a smaller size if it’s still driving you crazy.
