OBE-HDLP - Obenauf's Heavy Duty Leather Preservative

Hi,
Is Obenauf LP OK to use on Chomexcel leather? I've just bought a pair of Redwings 3180 and want to use the correct treatment for them? Has anyone got any experience with this type of leather?

I would assume so. I'm actually planning on using the lp on my Alden Indy CXL's soon. I can't imagine why it would have a negative effect on this specific leather.

I'm pretty sure you're good as @gaseousclay says. CXL is stuffed full of all sorts of oils and fats from the start and that's what this stuff is.

Thanks for the info. I'll try it on a non-obvious part of the boot just to test it out
I used the LP on a different pair of boots to good effect. It darkens the leather but that shouldn't matter.

Bought this to use on the Pale Rider shirt, but now in doubt if I should have bought the oil instead. Found only one reference to the product on the Pale Rider thread, and while it is sold (by IH) https://www.ironheart.co.uk/footwear/obe-hdlp.html as "Their most versatile leather conditioner", the product description at Obenaufs https://www.obenaufs.com/heavy-duty-lp-p/leather-preservative-paste.htm is clearly as a product for boots "Industrial Strength Protection to Work Boots". In fact the word "boots" comes up 9x in their product description, and 0x in the IH product description.

It'll be a bit of a pain to apply this evenly and will definitely darken the leather. Everytime I've used it on boots I swear it makes them less breathable but that could be in my head. It's intended to be used when you're expecting to be in wet weather though. Overall, you can use this on really any leather thing. Personally I probably wouldn't use it on that shirt for the couple of reasons above with being a pita and darkening. Also note it has a smell which some people dislike, so it would be even more noticable wearing it closer to your nose.

@pechelman and @louisbosco thanks for the thoughts. I now found one post in the pale rider thread where someone used the product (apparently after checking with Simmons Bilt). I will hold my horses (as it were) for now. Applied some on a purse today, and the stuff is really quite thick and "solid". I don't need much weather protection on the shirt (not a (motor)biker)... so I was thinking more about a quick fix to get some darkening going...

If you do go this route, definitely warm the tub up first, maybe by placing it in a hot water bath, to make it easier to apply. Also then consider using a hairdryer on low to help it spready evenly once on the shirt, similar to applying wax to other clothing. I'd also wear rubber gloves since it's pretty thick and sticky and give the shirt a couple of days to dry before wearing.

I've used Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP on a (horsehide) cafe racer jacket that I used to own and would not recommend it for the following reasons:
- It won't only waterproof the leather, but also make it less breathable (= sweating etc.)
- As it contains bees wax, the leather will creak (!) more when you move around.
- The stitches will be partially covered with the bees wax (white) residue, especially when the weather is colder.
- The (parfume?) smell is quite heavy and will last for a long while.
- It's sticky and will darken your leather (unless, of course, that's what you want to achieve).
These are the main reasons that I can think of off the top of my head, and of course, they only reflect my own opinion and observations.
If you need to condition your (horsehide) leather, I'd recommend BICK 4 - it's neutral in smell, will not darken the leather, leave any oily residues or creak. I do not, however, assume any responsibility for any unwanted outcomes
