IHSH-299-PUR - Ultra Heavy Flannel Work Shirt - Classic Check - Purple
-
For those interested, i finally got around to putting a video together on this beauty.
Great video as always! And am glad I am not the only one who thinks these UHF shirts are scratchy! Not only do you but so does this style blogger: https://dieworkwear.com/2019/01/12/finding-the-perfect-flannel-shirt/. Who says, 'These flannels can be a little starchy at first, but they soften up wonderfully over time.'
I have washed mine in 30 degrees with vinegar and it's still like wearing a woollen blanket! A beautiful blanket but scratchy wool nevertheless. Maybe IH will use Pima cotton instead. That's from the Andes too - and is far softer! I doubt that's ever going to happen. But at least I am not alone in finding the UHF's scratchy! I just hope that they do soften up wonderfully

Blanket-like sure, scratchy? Nah.
Wear an IH melton wool CPO, that’s scratchy!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Won't happen. Aspero cotton is supremely expensive, so we have tried every alternative that we can think of. In our opinion, nothing comes close to Aspero, so despite the cost, that is what we will continue to use.
Pima is a farmed cotton that was effectively invented and trademarked by the USDA in the early 20th century. It is grown in a number of places around the world, one of which is Peru

It's a good kind of scratchy. Ha. I think it's very soft.

Oh gosh. I didn't mean to cause offence to anyone by calling these shirts scratchy! If others who have them don't find them so then that's brilliant! I was just curious because I have never come across an item of clothing that is meant to be renowned for being super soft and yet seems so wildly different. That's all.
Of course, IH is not going to stop using Aspero cotton. I get that. Although Aspero is renowned for being a very dry cotton. Add some starchiness to that mix and you have, perhaps, the ingredients for what I call scratchy.
For what it's worth, I bought another UHF at the weekend and, despite it being pretty rough, it's nowhere near as bad as the purple.
So there we are. I'll just wear long-sleeved t-shirts!
But please, I meant to offence or to criticise! They are great shirts.

I do wonder whether the ‘legendary’ softness comes into play psychologically, i.e it makes you more conscious of the feel of the shirt, and you also maybe have a heightened level of expectation given the reputation (not to mention cost). In any case, glad you’ve found a way of making it work and hope that over time it breaks in and you get on a bit better with it

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone!
I truly just want everyone to enjoy their shirts. I didn’t mean to make you feel singled out, and I don’t feel the least offended. Just wanted some experienced voices to chime in, to see if there might be something different about the feel of this batch.

Owning 3 pairs, does not qualify me as expert, but from my perspective they are not scratchy or itchy. Woolen ones feel that way. Now if you expect the feel of a 6oz cotton from a 12oz fabric its a different story. They are heavy and robust and about as soft as you can get a fabric to feel at this weight.

to see if there might be something different about the feel of this batch.
Most/all UHF's patterns/colourways feel subtlety different from each other. This is because different dyes create different characteristics in the yarn and different weaves create different textured fabric.

Oh my! I wish I’d never said anything [emoji3526][emoji85][emoji3526] Although, for the record, I have the heavyweight flannels from UES and they are as soft as butter. And I have the IH Kersey shirts and the 14oz denim shirts and they are gorgeous too! Really lovely fabrics on all of those.
And that’s it. That’s all I’m ever going to say now on scratchiness or otherwise of any IH shirt! [emoji1374]

Please do not feel like you have to censor yourself on here. It's what makes this the forum so unique, though sometimes a bit brash. Its rarely personal and other viewpoints and perspectives create much more depth of conversation.
With that being said, I've owned way too much UHF's in my lifetime (before they even coined the term lol) and I think I understand what was trying to be conveyed. They're heavy duty flannels which in most cases reward the more wears you have on it. So if you expect something comfy and buttery (ie. silk-blend) from the get-go, you might not be as impressed.
As Giles stated, each fabric is different every year, model, and run. The one thing that is a perpetual constant is quality, which tends to far exceed mine for a flannel haha (except for that one turquoise block check run).

Hello,
New to Iron Heart flannels, and was wondering if you guys knew the likelihood (if any) that there might be a restock of the IHSH-299-PUR workshirt? I was unfortunately late in seeing this beautiful piece, and it now seems to be sold out everywhere. Would appreciate a response! Much appreciated.

@Stashanddash1 Selfedge has the western available in all sizes.
