IH-633S - Self Edge x Iron Heart 21oz Selvedge Straight Tapered
-
I got these at SE NYC on May 15, 2021. My 1st pair of IH jeans. Had them hemmed there and started wearing them in June. They are unwashed and I have ~25 wears on them (around the house or neighborhood walks). I absolutely love them - best jeans I've ever owned. For reference, I am 6'2 and 215 lbs wearing size 36 hemmed to 35. With the benefit of hindsight, a size 35 hemmed 33-34 would fit better. I will hot soak to try for some shrink soon.
As others have said, there's very little break-in on these. They were extremely comfortable after a couple of wears. Breathable from the start. Heavy and tough but with a familiar, blanket-like softness. They are not fast fading but I like the character they are beginning to show. They are versatile for shoe-paring - look good with chucks, engineers, oxfords, loafers, and sometimes slippers
Brief comparison…I've since also picked up 888 25oz indigo/black in size 36 and 777 14 oz mad black in size 36. The 633 are currently my favorite of the 3. I look forward to breaking in the 25 oz this fall/winter but they are still too rough to be "comfortable" right now. The 777 are a little too tight for my liking - I look forward to them relaxing a bit too. For now, the 633 are the good life

great fit @68degreesorless - the 633 is def one of my favorites cuts as well!

Does anybody have any input on this cuff size (i.e. too large)? This is my first pair of unhemmed IH jeans in 36" inseam, so by far the largest cuff in jeans I own. I'll be doing my first wash in a few months and am thinking of getting these hemmed once all remaining shrinkage is out of them. Just debating if it's even worth it. The cuff has kind of grown on me, but when I started wearing them, I thought it looked stupid high/thick for me. probably overthinking it anyways haha

Does anyone know if there is a restock coming? These are sold out in 34, and I would really like to get my hands on a pair.
@TeflonDon when I picked up my pair in the summer Self Edge seemed to have just restocked these. (Size 33) I'd assume they only get a full run of these once a year, but I could be wrong. I had to wait a few months to try on both the 34's (returning them) and finally landing on the 33's this past spring/summer

First of there isn’t any shrinkage to be had with the 21oz, so no first wash needed.
Secondly there is no right cuff size other than the one that makes you happy. Anyone else’s opinion has equal to, or less value than your own. For what it’s worth. They look great to me.
Congratulations on a great pair of jeans.

Hello! New to the forum and hoping that it's okay to ask a question about denim stretching (I can't seem to find a way to search within threads..)
I recently bought a pair of the 633S-21oz and they are just right in the waist (not too tight), but I'm concerned that the thigh doesn't have enough room. In particular, I'm barely able to grab excess fabric at the mid-thigh area (halfway between the bottom of my pelvis and my knees). This area doesn't feel constricting (ie. I can sit or squat down reasonably comfortably; I'm guessing this is because of the 21oz denim's loose weave?) but I'm worried that if I gain any extra weight, it'll become too tight. Does this area stretch at all?
On a side note, does anyone know how the 14oz denim stretches in the thigh compared to the 21oz?

I can tell you the main reason I’ve let go of various pairs of IH jeans is the thighs being too tight as you’re described… barely or no slack that you can pinch when sitting. Sometimes they look really good standing but you sit and then they are skin tight in the thighs. This doesn’t get any better (stretch out) with wear in my experience.

You will get stretch out of the 21oz. If you cannot pinch any material standing they are too tight and will not strech enough to be comfortable. Your call..if i was you i would size one up. Post some pictures we can get a better idea about the fit.

Let me chime in so that I can comfort and confuse you all at once!
It sounds like we might be in a similar boat. My waist is comfortable but my thigh is always tight. Not painted-on tight, but tight. Now, if you size up, the waist will be too big and you get a little more of the diaper effect in the crotch and butt areas. This is especially problematic if you like to tuck in your shirt like I do.
The thigh does stretch. I'm having trouble finding notes for stretch on my personal 21oz indigo, but I have notes that show the thigh stretching from 12.25" to 12.75" on the IH-888S-OD.
Obviously, it's up to you. I think that you might be unhappy with the top block if you size up. If you can try a size up without too much hassle, that might be your best bet. Just know that the 21oz denim is pretty stretchy where it needs to move.
You could also try the 888 cut, which is what I use now, to get a tiny bit more room in the thigh, or the 1955 cut, if you don't need the taper.
Edit -- Additional thoughts
I should add that, in my personal experience, if the denim isn't at least a little snug on the first wear, you probably should've sized down. That's the great thing about denim, you know? It stretches to you. Each pair becomes personalized. But, it can't stretch to you if it's already bigger than you.
That having been said, I see the styles online going to bigger and boxier fits. That's not my style but I see the appeal. If you also prefer a trimmer fit, you may want to stick with what you've got.

That's basically it - I have a relatively narrow waist but large thighs. That, and I don't think high-rise denim works for me as I have a shorter torso so it makes me look disproportionate. My challenge is that I need to size for my thighs, and if the waist becomes too large then my jeans sit on my hips instead, which might end up producing diaper butt so I prefer lower-rise where possible. I was hoping the 633's mid-rise is a good middle ground.
Here are some images I took. Waist is comfortable and if anything, just ever so lightly loose now that I've been trying it on a bit (hoping it won't be an issue if I always wear with a belt). The red arrows point to the part of my thigh where it's difficult to pinch any material when standing. It ispossible, but I'm only able to grab a small amount of fabric. I'm able to sit down on a chair without feeling any discomfort.

Big thigh to waist ratio dude here . Tried lots of cuts. 555 a total no, 777 better but still a bit tight in the thigh, 888 better, 634 perfection. I know that the lack of taper can put people off the 634, it did for me for a looong time, but you might be surprised if you give it a try.
That said, I don’t think your pair look bad at all, but the waist might stretch a bit more and be sloppy. Hope you find something you’re happy with!

Thanks everyone for the input! Now I'm worried about the waist and the thighs, haha!
The waist is indeed quite comfortable right now and I understand the 21oz denim might continue to stretch. Would this be prevented as I normally always wear a belt with the denim? I'm just a bit confused with sizing as I've previously taken advice to size down the waist, only to have the denim not stretch as much as I would've liked, and I'm seeing advice online that it's generally better to make sure the denim is comfortable right from the get-go. I'm sure with all sorts of fabrics, weights, loose/dense weaves, it's all a bit "your mileage may vary"...
Some local shops carry the 634S, which I believe the 633S is more or less the same from waist to knee, so I'll see how a size down might go. I'm just concerned that sizing down might result in the thigh to knee area being too tight.
I'll also check out the 888S but I'm not convinced the high rise will work for me..
