IH-888S-21 - 21oz Selvedge Denim Medium/High Rise Tapered Cut Jeans - Indigo

Heya guys, so I finally got my hands on a pair of 888s (Thanks AJ!) and I've got a possibly stupid-sounding question How high are you guys wearing these?
When I first put them on, I hiked them up as high as possible and got it so that the waist was just 1cm under my belly button, which was surprisingly comfortable! But throughout the day, they kinda slid down to my about where my 634s sit, about 5.5cm south of my belly button. I figure that so long as you cover up your naughty bits, you're not doing pants "wrong" but I'm just curious for sizing if I pick up another pair of maybe the 888s-OD.

Mine start higher but generally slide down as the day goes on.

Unless I cinch my belt a notch tighter, which becomes uncomfortable, my 888-NT's sit at my hip bones. All of my jeans ride at about my hip bones, regardless of how high the rise is.
IMO it comes down to the hip width. Higher rise cuts usually have a smaller waist than lower rise cuts, because the body's natural waist is smaller than the hips. Sizing down in this cut will make the hips a little snugger, and keep the jeans riding higher.
disclaimer: I'm using myself as a reference, and I'm a slim guy. Not everyone has the same body type, so the same size in this cut could fit very differently on two different guys with different body types.

@Paul9221 pretty much same. As heavy and as much as the denim stretches there's no avoiding them sitting low. Despite wearing mine for a year they still sit at my hips without a belt. I suggest a military web belt. It can be adjusted to whatever size you need and no need for being too tight. I use this one (when I wear a belt). I like this kind of buckle better instead of the slidy one.

This is one of the reasons I love Iron Heart overalls so much. They can be roomy and they always stay up. If I had a genie I would wish for some Ultra Heavy raw overalls. Or 25oz XHS overalls. I guess if I had a genie it would be 25 oz because it would probably take magic to make.

Paul… I have a few versions of the 888s. And each one first slightly different. I would say my 21oz are probably the more true version of the cut and my OD’s have more of a rise and my NT’s sit slightly lower. All fit perfectly and I don’t get much sag nor do I I need to hike them up with a belt. I think you really have to watch those measurements and know what works. I like the 888 as I have thicker legs and they fit perfect all the way down. Having said that, I just bought my first 555 because the measurements were similar to the NT and I knew they would work. It took me a bit to find my best cut.

Just to echo what's been said, my two pairs, IH-888-UHR and IH-888S-OD (which are brand new) both sit relatively high. Both fit well at the waist but have a tendency to slide a little. It's normal. Body shapes are so variable though that this will be different from person to person.
I'm most comfortable with the fit of these when worn high so I belt mine despite the fit on the waist band being good. Other people will look better letting them sag a little. Personal taste plays a role too.

Just to confirm some of the things I've seen, is it possible to have a 2 in stretch in the waist of these? I tried on a 34 today which felt okay in the waist, but was a bit more full in the leg than I wanted. The 33s fit really nice along my leg, but the waist causes me to muffin top over. My range of movement is still fine though. I've uploaded a shot of me in the 34s and perhaps someone can tell me I'm being paranoid about them looking big.

They look a little big in the leg and top block to me.
The 21oz will stretch readily. I’ve personally experienced around 1.5”. I’d say 2” is at the outer edges of what is possible but I could see it happening if needed.
By the sounds of things you don’t need two inches. If the W34 fits fine and there is around an inch between the sizes, you’ll get that easily from the W33.

Definitely too big. Size down

My rule of thumb - if you can button them, they fit [emoji23]

Haha, thanks all. I went back in to SFSE and tried the 33 back on and it felt fine. I was probably just in my head. Here is the fit with the 33s, still full in the thigh but I think the fit is good from the knee down. There was no way for me to fit into a 32 either without feeling like I was suffocating. I'll be getting them hemmed to 32 in for some double cuff action and these will be my labor pants.
For reference, my best fitting slim pants are my W+H Kyoto Blacks which measure at
Waist: 17.7
Rise: 11
Hip Width: 20.1
Thigh Width: 11.8
Hem: 6.7and I was looking for a slightly fuller, straight cut pant for bumming around/activities where I could lift up my leg and do things like the 888 which measures (according to SESF)
Waist: 16.25
Rise: 12
Thigh: 12.2
Leg Opening: 8.2Edit - I feel set on this but as I scan through the pics of other users here, all of there fits look slimmer through the thigh. Does it look like this is still fairly loose on me? I have time to call to cancel the hem, but I don't know if a 32W would fit me in my waist…
-
They look a bit relaxed from the front but fine from the rear. A couple things to keep in mind: they will drape better once you break them in, and the waist will stretch well over an inch (I’ve gotten almost 2” out of the 21oz denim). If you want a slimmer fit through the thigh, unless the 32’s feel impossibly tight in the waist they will quickly stretch enough to be comfortable. If the 33’s fit comfortably in the waist when you first put them on, or if they’re just a bit tight, they will probably stretch enough to be too loose. The guys at Self Edge should be able to give you some guidance.
-
I think if you want a more relaxed pair of jeans then they are fine.
I would always advise sizing down if the other measurements work as the waist will stretch quickly.
Your call on how the other measurements feel on the 32’s.

I was able to cancel the hem and I'll be stopping by again to check out their widest 32. The guy measured the thigh to be about 0.3 in narrower across the front which seems consistent with self edge measurements. Ironheart measurements calculate out a 0.4 in difference. I don't live close to SE where I can go every day, but I'm trying to generate a mental image for what it would look like. Could anyone postulate if that would visually trim down the thigh signifcantly? It's anywhere between a 0.6 to 0.8 in difference.
Edit -
For reference and posterity for any future purchasers, I did a measurement comparison between between my previous jeans and known Iron Heart's Measurements -
I realize doing these quantitative measurements for a pair of jeans may be overkill, but I'm limited in my ability to go try them. Anyway, after putting these numbers against each other and considering how I've felt in these different fits, I think the 32s should be the appropriate size for me in the thigh while giving me the extra benefit of a longer rise to have flexibility to do things. However it seems like I'll need to put work into stretching them ~2 inches in the waist for them to fit comfortably (or lose weight, which is never a bad idea).
I'll update with more pics when I finally get my hands on them…
