IHM-30-IND - Whipcord N1 Jacket - Indigo
-
I wear an IH N-1 happily in -10C and below. I did buy my big enough to layer under though. A henley and a UHF in the coldest days.
I don't own a UHF, but from what I've read they sell out pretty quick, especially the crazy checks.
-
UHF, woolly jumper, denim shirt…. whatever you’ve got. I think the N-1 is good down to zero on it’s own, but layer something heavy under it and it does very well in an arctic winter. The wind resistance and insulation it offers is remarkable considering it isn’t, strictly speaking, technical outerwear.
-
I wouldn’t recommend it in really cold weather especially in high winds. It’s loose around the waist area which isn’t exactly ideal for a Canadian winter. I’m not really a fan of having layers under a jacket but if you’re happy doing that then go for it.

Get put in and the waist is not an issue. In addition the jacket has an extra wind resitant layer sewn into it, to avoid wind penetration on a bike.
You are welcome to hour opinion of course. However I’ve been using an IH N-1 in the arctic for four winters now.
Are there more technical items out there, designed for extreme weather? Of course. There are many companies that do exactly and only that. As you mention the IH mountain parka is another option.
But does it keep you toasty on your 20min walk home from work, or hour long commute, in -10C, when it is literally blowing a literal gale, and the driving snow is coming in horizonatal? Absolutely. I have a lot of practical experience of exactly that.

I have a lot of practical experience of exactly that.I’ve got the IHM-29-BLK from this past winter season. I can tell you it’s the warmest, most windproof winter jacket I’ve ever worn. It performed quite well and kept me toasty through the Berlin winter.
One must remember the original purpose of the first N-1 was to keep NATO sailors warm while working on decks of aircraft carriers in the North Atlantic. The IH version has only improved on the original with an added windproof layer and alpaca wool.
While it is not a completely waterproof technical parka, it is an extremely warm and windproof winter jacket. Plus, IMO, it’s just a cool coat [emoji41] The jungle cloth outer layer allows the sleeves to fade nicely and create honeycombs similar to any other denim jacket.
If you want a waterproof, windproof technical parka, get one.
But if you want a really cool N-1 that performs quite well in winter, I cannot imagine you’ll find a better one than this IH version, all the more so with this indigo dyed version which should produce some lovely fades [emoji4]

Great and really informative review @Alex_24

Nice to see another Berliner here.

I pulled the trigger on the last medium indigo N1. It’s sweltering here in Canada so this will have to go straight into the closet until the fall
I’ve picked up a few IH pieces and haven’t been able to wear any of it yet. COVID has allowed me to work from home, so I’ve only been rocking pajamas since March.
Thanks to all who chimed in with their experience with the N1.

Yeah, getting dressed to go to work has never been as beautiful as it was when our lockdown ended. Congrats on the purchase, let us know how you get on with it.

Thanks, Dude! Send me a PM if you wanna meet up at Burg & Schild sometime soon.

Picked this up yesterday in Gosport, thanks to the team.
Went with a small even though my UHF is medium. Been out and about today running errands and staying very warm, looking forward to wearing this a lot throughout the winter and seeing how the indigo evolves.

Looking good, @Nkwkfld! I've worn my N1 for about half a winter now, and it is starting to show some evo, esp. on the sleeves and around the pockets. Definitely a very comfortable and warm jacket.
Nice library you've got there too, btw!

Looking forward to wearing this jacket again now that temps are dropping.
