Coronavirus (Covid-19) Discussion

Well-said @goosehd
A lot of people point to the fact that children seem to weather COVID quite well so far (though Delta seems to be upending a lot of our early conventional wisdom). What worries me though is that we don't fully understand long-term effects and have seen mild infections result in tissue scarring and other possibly irreparable damage. I know many view it as alarmist to think about the possibility of your child having a chronic, potentially debilitating illness surface down the road from this disease, but why take that chance? There are risks I am not prepared to take, and I think it would be cavalier with a cherished being's life to operate otherwise.
Call it living in fear if you like, but don't forget that fear is a survival instinct. We wouldn't be here without it.
I think we'll all get this virus sooner or later, and I want to push it back as far as possible when the virus is better understood and managed and we have better therapies to mitigate its impact.

My maternal granny had Polio as a kid, was never fully functional thereafter….
I think we'll all get this virus sooner or later,
100% agree…..

That’s very optimistic. Climate change, a mystery virus with a cure half the world doesn’t want, political implosion… we’re dealing with multiple self imposed extinction level events SIMULTANEOUSLY and we can’t be bothered to wear a mask at the grocery store without crying about it on Facebook (another invention of the anti christ).
The question isn’t whether one of them gets us, it’s which one gets us before the meteor.
But I’m generally a half empty kind of guy so take that for what it’s worth.

Just spoke to one of my closest friends. He is a Bonefishing guide on Andros:

You may see a pic of a very unhirsuite me in the gallery
He has Covid (which I did not know until I called him), and I have never before spoken to someone who sounded so close to death…..
FUCK, FUCK, FUCK.....

Matt you're cracking me up over here.
It's hard for me not to be on Team Meteor these days. Our species is capable of so much, but at the moment it looks like we'll never get anywhere near our potential because we can't get out of our own way.
Here's a little more misanthropic and ironic mirth for you: Saw someone on the subreddit r/NoNewNormal where people are really butthurt about mild inconveniences they're being asked to take on in order to minimize the impact of COVID unironically write:
"Good to see some antivaxxers on here. Seems like we're a dying breed."
Also, some genius in my home state of Mississippi (for those non-Americans who might not be aware–though I suspect our reputation precedes us globally--it is famously a shithole third-world country in the US, the buckle of the Dumb Belt, last in every metric of economics, quality of life, health, and education, etc) got some worm treatment from a feed store and landed himself in a hospital after injecting the (topical, bovine/equine) treatment. I guess the Idiot Echo Chamber believes this worm treatment is more effective than the vaccines.
To a degree, natural selection is taking care of things, but not nearly fast enough, and with entirely too much collateral damage.

I'm all for meteors, but not until after FW21, thank you very much

@neph93 I don't think of it as a nightmare (else I'd sound like @Matt ).
It is what it is.
My cup is half full, so I believe I will fish with him again. And listening to him tonight, I will do whatever I can do to get back to Andros in 2022 and fish with him again.
He helped both @Madame Buttonfly and @Alex (and other friends catch their first Bonefish)…...

@Giles So sorry to hear about your friend! Sending thoughts and prayers his way and hope that he pulls through.
Side note: My brother in law (he and his wife are both vaccinated) has decided to let his son (13) decide if he wants to get vaccinated or not. To say I am a little pissed off would be an understatement.
I feel that one of our roles as a parent is to protect our kids, and I can't see how this fits in with that.
-
I’m definitely on the side of natural selection and I love the irony of those less evolved, I just wish I didn’t have to worry about these damned kids. Yet again, they ruin everything. The minute they can get the shot I’m dragging their screaming little butts to the nearest vax spot and will do so with with no remorse and a smile on my face.

Giles, I’m so sorry to hear about your friend. I hope he recovers and I hope Alex and Kira bounce back quickly as well.
I live in southwest Missouri where we have a 39% vaccination rate. And wouldn’t you know it, we’re also setting records for infections and hospitalizations. We have a huge problem with misinformation and willful ignorance. Its a shit show here. Not ready for the meteor yet but it’s pretty damn deflating.
