I wonder if my dentist would be as relaxed when I would show up 30 min late to my 18:00 appointment as she is at the moment with me waiting here for 30 min?

Which is why I'm never sorry if I'm late for a Dr.'s or dentist's appointment.

Seriously….maybe you'd get a boss to let you go to the funeral on your lunch break or leave early one day if you're lucky...

It has it's moments @Matty123 I talk to my brother who now lives in Brooklyn and sometimes struggles for work, and often wonder how I'd get on there. The US system certainly keeps you sharp and driven, whereas I suspect Norway was blunted my competitive edge…
Nah…Norway sounds awesome. The US system of working is overrated and keeps you on the path to cardiac arrest and other stress related illnesses.

I worked about eight years in middle to upper management in the high school system and one of my teachers lost her teenage son in a car crash. This was in April. We just gave her the rest of the school year off, no questions asked. She came back to work in August. Squared it with the local authority after the fact. They didn't argue much.

I’m guessing the time off is with full, or near full pay?
My real issue with US business customs is the way they treat new mothers. It’s disgraceful. Sorry, perhaps this is bordering on political, and MODs can delete if they wish.

Full pay. Social services pay some of it, your employer pays the rest.
For the record, I personally don't consider this particular statement to be political as it's about the way employers treat their employees and differences in practice. That being said it does have the potential to be a political issue because it involves social policy and gender. But we'll deal with that if it happens

No doubt, hell mothers to be as well. My ex was laid off from her job of several years when she got pregnant. Of course they didn't outright tell her that and list that as the reason for termination but everyone knew that was the real reason she was let go.
