I would vote no to the rough out side and the smooth side. Just my opinion.

Without.

No kiltie. If you want a kiltie roughout is better than smooth.

I'd say without on the kilties, but you do you hun

So I've been wearing my 526L (V1) again lately and I'm afraid that it's perhaps too small on me? I know that Type III is supposed to be on the shorter side but I'm thinking it might be smaller than the "standard". What do you guys think?

I think that's spot on. Great fit. Length is perfect.

As a member who has worn (S)mall Iron Heart, that is too small. And also the reason I don’t own a type III. They are great for the larger sizes. People can wear them at basically THE SAME LENGTH as their UHF’s and IHSH’s. It’s not fair. But on our end of the spectrum, these jackets are just too short with an untucked shirt. Even with the modified length.
Your pics indicate the smallness. It’s not just the length, in your case, but the chest. Especially up around the neck, which is probably why you’re feeling like it’s too small. Just look at what it’s doing to the undershirt. I don’t think you’ll be happy with it long term.
Sell it. BUY ANOTHER one size up.

A few thoughts…
If I saw you on the street, I wouldn't think that that jacket was too small. It looks good!
On the other hand, if I could only have one type III, I would get one large enough to allow me to button up with a UHF underneath. If you can have one of each, fantastic!
I have a 526Lod that fits me like yours, so I bought another one a size up thinking that I'd sell the smaller one. But the smaller one fits so well over just a T that I just can't bring myself to get rid of it.
The non-modified type IIIs are short per design. Even the modified duck type III is that short, so don't let that scare you away.

I think it looks great - wish I could wear a type III like that - as long as you wear it just with a T underneath and unbuttoned. It's really perfect! For all other wears you could get (another) one one size up.
When I began reading the forum and heard that some people own more than one type III (with these prizes) I was almost outraged, now my own collection is growing …

Thats how its supposed to look–-hang on to it.
Looks like you've got some fades coming through too -
cityofdelusion right now the fit looks great. But I think to be conclusive we need buttoned up pics if you plan to wear it like that. Length wise, I feel it’s great. But I fear for the chest and mobility side of the fit. How does it feel in the chest/armpits? That’s what usually determines size for me

@cityofdelusion PERFECT fit when worn with a tee
What I will add is that if it is normal practice for you to layer under you type lll so for example a tee with an UHF or a tee with a hoodie then you may need a size up in order to accommodate the extra stuff
Final thought is do you want to be able to wear it buttoned up with your tee / tee & UHF / tee & hoodie

Thank you @den1mhead!
Mainly two reasons speak against going up a size in denim jackets for me:
First, I get very cold easily and hence I prefer wearing my leather jacket or wool coat over wearing denim jackets.
Second, if I size up to be able to layer with my denim jacket, then I'd be unhappy with the sleeve length. As I wear my denim jacket mostly in the warmer times of the year, just a t-shirt should be fine!

Not as much of an "outfit advice" as a cool find. I was returning a gift for my wife to Nordstrom Rack and stumbled upon these utility jackets from The North Face. Really odd release for them IMO, and maybe why they ended up at The Rack. They are a fairly hefty and rough cotton fabric.
The Slate grey/black one is a size medium, and the Undyed or Ecru is a size large. I didn't purchase either, but they seem like a cool outer layer over IH for $80.
(I have now seen it for $65 on Backcountry.com. that may push me over the edge.)
