IH-666S-21 - 21oz Selvedge Denim Slim Straight Cut Jeans - Indigo

Thanks @neph93 ! It was definitely worth trying on a couple of sizes and getting expert advice (the advantage of being only 2 hours from the world’s centre).
It was really funny yesterday - I wore the same shirt and almost everyone’s first words to me were, “nice shirt”, I think sometimes before a more conventional greeting! Of course, we all know it’s true.

Nice score, @ARNC perfect fit.

These are my beloved Iron Heart 666S-21, just over five years old now. They were my first pair of Iron Hearts, purchased in Ueno alongside a pair of Oni. A pair of 555 XHS are being delivered to me today, so I thought I'd take the time to share what has been my favorite pair of jeans ever.
My four year old daughter recently laughed at how many holes my jeans had and I replied that they were older than her, which sort of dawned on me the moment I said the words. These jeans have been with me since I got married, bought a house and had two incredible daughters. They have been repaired quite a bit and probably looked their best about a year ago, but that hasn't made me love them any less now. It's going to be really, really weird putting on a new pair that don't conform to me and that are stiff as hell. I sort of wish I could wear these for another five years, but I know they're on the brink as is.
Pockets, crotch and knees have all had repairs done on them. I've washed them more than I can count. As time went by I washed them more and more.
I love the train tracks they've developed and I love some of the blowouts around the pockets and outseams. The combs are a bit soft looking, but these aren't very tight around my knees.
I have admittedly become an Iron Heart addict since I purchased these mainly due to the cuts and size measurements, but if it's good to you it's got to be good for you, right?

I grabbed these right around the time Snake Oil Provisions introduced them to their lineup.
After a few years in 555s and 777s, I think I’ve found my new favorite cut.

Straight out of the bag, I think the fit turned out just right! Couldn’t be more excited about my first pair of IHs. Thanks @Graham for the help on working through sizing and answering a bunch of questions via email. Now I just have to figure out if and how much to hem the bottom while still keeping a decent cuff.
-
Looks great !!
Well done on getting it right with your first pair.
Graham helped me out too with my first( and so far only) pair of 666s. -
Boom! They look perfect @schowlera The 666 is for sure your cut!
Just emailing you re hemming!
-
^ Affirmative! The cut suits you best @schowlera

Hey everyone, just got my IH-666S-21s this week. Such fast service from IHUK, from UK to NZ in only a week, impressive at this time of year thanks.
Sizing was always going to be a bit of a tricky one since I've never had heavy Japanese denim before, I did expect it to be thicker and stiffer, though hard to guesstimate how much room will be needed with stretch from wear factored in. I'm thinking maybe I've been a bit too ambitious with sizing, and/or perhaps the 666 cut is a little too small for me in the top block, around the thighs and front rise. Pictures speak a thousand words so I've embarassed myself to show the fit below
I can stand to lose some weight so the waist fit doesn't concern me too much, decent muffin top going on if I don't suck it in a little, but I think with wear they might stretch out OK.
The area that worries me more is that the thighs are tight, and the front rise maybe another inch or half would be better. The thighs are quite snug which is OK when standing, and not too bad for walking but it's very tight if I raise my knees. I can walk fine, but it does sort of feel like I'm wearing a corset across the thigh / where the bottom of front rise meets the thigh if I do any bending. The jeans sit slightly lower on my hip too due to the thickness of the denim and stiffness of it, making the mid rise more like a lowish rise for me.
Fresh out of the package I couldn't quite button up the jeans, it was maybe 2cm from reaching the button hole. So I wore them while gaming for a couple of hours, and then could button them without much fuss. I think I'd worn them about 4 hours when I took these photos and the fit had improved greatly since first trying them. I guess the question now is, how much more give can be expected?
It's probably hard to tell from the photos how snug they are, but I think if you look at the thighs in the back shot, and from the side when knee is raised, you can see the jeans are taut. And my knee doesn't want to go much higher than that without a good fight. In the photo it doesn't even look like I'm trying to raise my knee, but that's basically as high as it will go without pushing through the resistance.
I am not too fussed if I have to sell these, I was kinda expecting I'd have to try one pair to guesstimate my size properly. They're great jeans and I'm sure someone will buy them if needed.
So I guess my questions would be:
Has anyone else experienced stiffness in the thigh like this, where it's difficult to raise your knee? Does this end up going away with wear?
And has anyone else had a tighter fitting pair like this that has worked out? There's a slight "straight jacket" feel to these, like not painful, but just that your strapped in and being a little compressed.
I had heard that the 21oz has a fair bit of give in it, just tricky to know how it would play out with long term wear.
Any feedback on the amount of stretch / give would be usefulI would rather sell these on without further wear if it seems like they will always be a bit too much on the snug side for me. I think even if I make an effort to exercise and trim down my mid a little, the thigh / crotch area if that doesn't slacken off might still be a nuisance, wearable perhaps, but maybe not optimal?
For reference these are size 32 IH-666S-21, with 32.5in waist.
I am about 5'7, 80kg, I never really considered myself to have large thighs so interesting that these seem so snug compared to other peoples photos. Chonky boi needs to lose some chonk. -
The 21oz is very forgiving. These will never be loose and comfy, but if you don’t mind a trim thigh, you can definitely expect up to half inch of permanent stretch there when they’re put under stress (aka worn). The waist is probably going to stretch well over an inch. I’d say you could try them for a couple of weeks, then flip if they still don’t feel like something you want to deal with.

@plumbdog I’m afraid to say they might just be on the small side. It is marginal though. Generally speaking, tight when new is a good thing. Not least with the 21oz. I think the waist will work out with wear, but the 666 does have a very slim top block and thighs, and they won’t stretch that much.
I’d consider sizing up or looking at the 634. Third option would be the 777 if you like a bit of taper.
-
I’m with him. I had some 666sod that fit like that and I ended up selling them after a while. Snug when new is good, tight not so much. They shouldn’t be so tight that you can’t move properly. Also, while the denim is forgiving, that doesn’t necessarily mean you want it to stretch out as much as it can. If you can button them easily but don’t have any room to get your fingers in there then that’s the sweet spot. Then they’ll stretch to fit you comfortably. The thighs won’t stretch as much as the waist. But like you said, having a frame of reference is good.
-
I would try a pair of 634 or 888 but you could also go up a size or two with the 666. Those look uncomfortable to me.
-
Thanks for the fast replies, I'm inclined to agree that perhaps an 888 might have been better. I was originally looking at the 888 but was a little worried the top block would have been too big / diaper butt (10.3 vs 11.9 inches front rise, and 2in rise extra in the back also)
In a properly fitted new pair of 21oz can people normally lift their knee up to hip height easily right away? Or does it take some breaking in before that softens up and range of motion improves, even if the fit was good?

Totally agree with what others have said. On the question above I’d say yes. The other issue I suspect you might have is that with all that tension you’ll blow the crotch out prematurely. On the whole I think you’re best shifting them on and having a go with a different cut
-
Go with 634 if you are worried about the rise on 888. Personally I would prefer a bit looser than too tight.
I used to have a pair of 666 that I had a hard time lifting my legs in…it never got better.
